Gamescom 2023 Sees Surge in Attendance and Industry Concerns About Funding
 1

This year, Gamescom, the world's largest computer and video game exhibition, saw a significant increase in attendance compared to 2022. The organizers reported around 320,000 visitors, marking the end of the five-day event on Sunday. This is a notable rise from the 265,000 attendees the previous year. The record attendance was in 2019, reaching 373,000 visitors, followed by a disruption due to the pandemic, resulting in Gamescom being held exclusively online.

Prominent participants at the exhibition included industry giants like Nintendo, Xbox, Tencent and Ubisoft, as well as streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Crunchyroll. Despite the gaming industry's continued growth over the years, German game developers have played a relatively minor role in the scene. With the ongoing trend of digitalization, the gaming sector is considered highly promising, with potential spillover effects into other segments of the economy, like artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR).

The Federal Government has been supporting the gaming industry for a while through funding initiatives. However, in a bid to cut costs, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Technology is planning to allocate fewer funds in 2024 than it did in 2023, which has garnered criticism from the industry. German companies are worried about potential setbacks in international competition due to this decision.

We congratulate these absolutely amazing cosplayers for winning the cosplay contest yesterday!

Thank you to EVERYONE for participating and making gamescom 2023 so special.

We would also love to thank our supporters and judges, who made it possible to have such a great time:

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden" Unveils Gameplay Details and Intriguing Mechanics

A newly released gameplay video showcases scenes from the upcoming role-playing game, "Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden".

Furthermore, journalists had the chance to personally delve into the project by Don't Nod Studio, and they revealed intricate details in the comments accompanying the video.

The game's level structure draws comparisons to recent entries in the God of War series. While the locations may possess a linear layout, they encourage exploration with the freedom to move in various directions.Spatial puzzles are integral to the gameplay experience.During the process of exploring locations, the main characters - Red, a Scottish warrior, and his spectral lover Antea - engage in dialogues with each other. Players are granted the power of choice through dialogue options while in control of the character. The shooting mechanics deliver an enjoyable feel, although reloading proves to be somewhat sluggish, limiting the musket's viability as a primary weapon.Close combat adheres to standard principles, encompassing both weak and powerful strikes, the art of parrying, and effective blocking. In the heat of battle, players have the option to switch to Antea, who wields her own repertoire of spectral melee attacks.Outside of combat scenarios, Antea assists Red in exploring locations. She possesses the unique ability to perceive traces of ghosts that have traversed specific areas, significantly contributing to the investigation of various occurrences. As her perception primarily centers around grim demises, Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden exudes a somber ambiance.Throughout the game, the protagonists will journey through diverse locales and uncover the tales of their inhabitants. Each segment prompts players to make crucial decisions based on the information at hand. These choices shape not only the destinies of non-playable characters but also the fate of Antea. Some choices draw her closer to her final transition to the realm of the departed, while others enhance the prospects of her resurrection.Developers estimate that completing the game will demand around 20 to 30 hours of gameplay. The anticipated release date for Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is scheduled for November 7, 2023. This action RPG will be accessible on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 platforms.

Elevating Entertainment: Samsung's Gaming Hub Set to Transform 2020 Smart TVs

During Gamescom 2023, the prominent South Korean tech giant, Samsung, revealed its intentions to elevate the capabilities of its 2020 series of smart TVs. These television sets will soon feature the addition of the Gaming Hub app, set to become available later this year.

Details Unveiled

The Gaming Hub stands out as a distinctive gaming store designed for Samsung TVs. What captures attention is its capability to facilitate game streaming directly from the cloud. This unique functionality empowers users to indulge in gaming without the necessity of acquiring gaming consoles or similar hardware.

 1

This innovative service amalgamates games from a variety of streaming platforms, encompassing the likes of Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW (with Google Stadia currently inactive). Beyond gaming, the Gaming Hub extends its scope to include the streaming of content from platforms such as Spotify and YouTube. Consequently, users gain the flexibility to effortlessly transition between diverse entertainment mediums.

Notably, the Gaming Hub isn't constrained by resolution limitations. It extends its support to encompass gameplay experiences in both 4K and 8K resolutions, provided the corresponding TV models offer the necessary support. Even for models lacking native support for such high resolutions, the app employs simulated image reproduction to cater to a wider range of users.

A distinctive facet of the Gaming Hub is its remarkable compatibility with approximately 90% of Bluetooth controllers, complemented by virtual analog support. This dynamic feature allows users to choose between the tactile experience of physical controllers and the convenience of virtual control interfaces.

According to insights shared by Mike Luzero from Samsung's gaming products division, this broadening of functionality for the 2020 TV lineup is poised to grant "tens of millions of gamers access to their favorite games and services."

While the precise debut date for the Gaming Hub on the 2020 TV series remains undisclosed, industry experts are speculating that the unveiling of this innovative addition could potentially occur before the culmination of the current year.

However, it's clear that some players have expressed frustration due to what they consider a slower pace of development. Recent reviews from the past 30 days show that only 55% of these reviews are positive.

NVIDIA Unveils Ray Tracing Reconstruction Technology at Gamescom 2023

During Gamescom 2023, NVIDIA unveiled a new feature called Ray Tracing Reconstruction (RR). This addition will become part of the DLSS 3.5 version and is set to function not only on the 4000 series chips but on all RTX graphics cards.

RR is designed to identify ray tracing effects within games and subsequently reduce visual "noise" in the imagery. The initial titles to incorporate this technology will include Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, Alan Wake and Portal RTX.

 1

Alex Battaglia from Digital Foundry expressed significant admiration for RR among the array of showcased technologies at Gamescom 2023. He shared his perspective after AMD disclosed details about their FSR 3.0 upscaler, expected to debut in games later this fall.

"This is likely the most impressive technology I've encountered at Gamescom. Over the past five years, I've closely tracked developments in real-time noise reduction for ray tracing effects. Ray Tracing Reconstruction within DLSS 3.5 seems to address all known issues while rendering previous noise reduction approaches instantly outdated. It's truly remarkable." - Alex Battaglia, Digital Foundry reviewer.

Battaglia suggests that RR holds a revolutionary role in noise reduction technologies, paralleling the impact of DLSS 2.0 on upscaling solutions.

"In a subjective sense, this mirrors the impact of DLSS 2.0's release. Prior to DLSS, we'd become accustomed to smoothing-related challenges, but DLSS provided a superior alternative, with the most surprising aspect being the original resolution's reduction. Similarly, Ray Tracing Reconstruction seems to surpass all preceding noise reduction techniques." - Alex Battaglia, Digital Foundry reviewer.

However, it's important to note that this product is a limited edition piece and isn't slated for mass production.

In terms of technical specifications, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora Limited Edition remains consistent with the standard variant. Exclusive Peek at Fallout TV Series Unveiled in First Teaser at Gamescom 2023
 1

The inaugural teaser for the forthcoming Fallout TV series has emerged, but its unveiling was reserved solely for attendees of Gamescom 2023 in Cologne. Regrettably, the broader public will have to wait for its debut, as reported by IGN. The popular post-apocalyptic video game franchise, Fallout, is undergoing adaptation for Amazon's streaming platform, with director Jonathan Nolan leading the charge. The teaser presentation was led by the show's imaginative director, Todd Howard. Evidently, the series aims to encompass a plethora of adored elements that hold a special place in the hearts of the game's enthusiasts.

In the succinct teaser, spectators caught a glimpse of the Brotherhood of Steel on a march across a desolate wasteland, the iconic Radroaches, multiple nuclear detonations seemingly occurring in a contemporary setting, and a frame featuring the ghoul character brought to life by Walton Goggins ("The Hateful Eight," "Django Unchained"), bearing a striking resemblance to Fallout 4's John Hancock.

The TV series is set to narrate a storyline distinct from the game's existing plots. Enthusiasts can anticipate its premiere in the year 2024.

Possible Delay Looms for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Sequel Release as Developers Navigate Challenges
 1

Numerous speculations surrounding a potential delay for the highly anticipated sequel to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. seem to be gaining credibility. Observers have pointed out a notable detail in the official game press kit – an indication of a release date in the first quarter of 2024. This comes after the initial promise of the game's launch in December of the current year.

Presently, GSC Game World developers are actively presenting a demo version of the game at Gamescom 2023. Impressions from players who've had hands-on experience with it are rather mixed, with technical glitches being a common concern. These could be seen as further indications of a potential postponement.

In a parallel development, Yevgeny Grigorovich granted an interview to the prominent gaming platform IGN during the exhibition. However, he refrained from discussing any specifics regarding release dates or potential delays. Thus, there remains no official confirmation for the speculated delay.

Clearly, the development team finds itself in a precarious situation due to the ongoing conflict initiated by Russia. This contextualizes the delays in the game's production and it's becoming increasingly doubtful that the game will hit the shelves before the year's end.

Epic Trailer Revealed for Granblue Fantasy: Relink Game at Gamescom 2023

As part of Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023, an epic trailer for the role-playing action game Granblue Fantasy: Relink was unveiled. The game is being developed by the Japanese studio Cygames. The developers also revealed the release date - the game will launch on February 1, 2024, for PC, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4.

On PlayStation consoles, the game will release in three physical editions: a standard edition for $59.99, an extended edition with a soundtrack, artbook, and gift packaging for $99.99, and a collector's edition with a dragon figurine, card set, and metal ornament for $179.99.

It's worth recalling that Granblue Fantasy: Relink was initially being developed by PlatinumGames under an agreement with the franchise's rights holders. However, production was eventually transferred to Cygames' in-house studios and restarted. The final game will offer a single-player story campaign and a cooperative mode designed for up to four players.

During Gamescom 2023, the developers revealed that the story campaign will take approximately 20-25 hours to complete. Additionally, a total of 100 hours of content has been created for the game overall.
