After being confined to an online setting in January of last year, Awesome Games Done Quick 2024 marked the return of the speedrunning event to a live venue. The Games Done Quick team organized a thrilling seven-day marathon in Pittsburgh, PA, raising a commendable total of $2,516,507 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.
AGDQ 2024's shift to Pittsburgh was influenced, in part, by a fallout between Games Done Quick and the event's former host state, Florida. Despite a slight dip from the $2.64 million raised in January, this year's final total exceeded the $2.2 million from the previous Summer Games Done Quick. The total sum comprised direct donations, Twitch subscriptions, Twitch Bits, and purchases through GDQ partners such as The Yetee and Fangamer.
One notable aspect of Awesome Games Done Quick 2024 was the diverse array of runs showcased. In addition to standard individual runs and perennial favorites, there were noteworthy GDQ debuts like Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, and Lies of P. The event also featured unconventional run categories, including a dog running Gyromite, Super Mario 64 played with a drum kit, and a glitch showcase in Super Mario Maker 2. These unique runs, coupled with Bid War runs that allowed donors to choose between two games, added a distinct flavor to this year's event without compromising its core spirit.
While the Shacknews staff highlighted some favorite runs in the Shack Chat feature, the list barely scratched the surface of the incredible runs showcased throughout the week. The final day of the marathon presented captivating showcases of games like Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Elden Ring, Baldur's Gate 3, and Shacknews' 2023 Game of the Year, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The event culminated with Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster, where the live audience eagerly counted down to the $2.5 million milestone, enthusiastically shouting "Hooray!" with every thousand dollars closer to the goal, continuing a joyful tradition that started with this week's run of Bluey: The Videogame.
After the unconventional Memorial Day weekend marathon last year, Summer Games Done Quick 2024 is set to return to its usual July 4 week slot. SGDQ 2024 is scheduled to take place from June 30 to July 6 in Minneapolis, MN. Before that, keep an eye out for the women of Frame Fatales making their comeback to online speedrunning during Frost Fatales 2024 from March 3-9. Additionally, Black History Month will witness the return of Unapologetically Black and Fast (UBAF) to the GDQ Hotfix on February 17. To catch up on any runs you may have missed, you can visit Games Done Quick on YouTube and the Games Done Quick website.
