Rocket League to Remove Esports Tokens in April Update

Psyonix has announced that Esports Tokens will be removed from Rocket League on April 22, streamlining the game’s currency system. Following this change, Credits will become the only in-game currency, making it easier for players to purchase cosmetics. Any remaining Esports Tokens in player accounts will be converted into Credits with a 10% bonus, rounded up to the nearest 50.

Esports Tokens Exit, RLCS Shop Takes Over

The Esports Shop, first introduced in patch 1.61 on April 16, 2019, allowed players to buy RLCS-themed cosmetics, such as team decals, wheels, and banners. Unlike standard items, Esports Tokens could only be purchased with real money and were exclusive to this store. However, as of April 22, the Esports Shop will be rebranded as the RLCS Shop, continuing to offer Rocket League Championship Series-themed content but using Credits instead.

RLCS Shop to Feature New Universal Decals & Team Goal Explosions

Alongside the currency shift, the RLCS Shop will introduce universal team decals, a first for Rocket League. Unlike previous RLCS skins, these can be equipped on any Car Body, except for licensed vehicles like those from third-party franchises (e.g., Spider-Man). Additionally, Takeover Goal Explosions—customized for each RLCS team—will be available.

A Move Toward a Unified Economy

Originally released as a paid game in 2015, Rocket League saw moderate success until Epic Games acquired Psyonix and transitioned it to free-to-play in 2020. This shift massively expanded the player base and helped the game reach new heights. Now, by removing Esports Tokens and consolidating purchases under Credits, Psyonix may be aiming to simplify transactions and boost Rocket Pass sales.

With April 22 marking a significant change in Rocket League’s economy, players can look forward to easier in-game purchases and an exciting new wave of esports-themed cosmetics in the RLCS Shop.
