Meta’s Next Big Bet: AI-Powered Humanoid Robots

Meta Platforms Inc. is diving headfirst into the world of humanoid robotics, following its push into augmented reality and artificial intelligence. The tech giant is significantly investing in AI-driven robots that can perform human-like tasks, such as household chores, with plans to build the necessary hardware and software within its Reality Labs division.

As reported by Bloomberg, Meta is assembling a new team dedicated to the project, focusing on creating a humanoid robot powered by advanced AI, sensors, and software. This ambitious move is not just about hardware but also about establishing the foundational technologies for other companies to manufacture and sell humanoid robots.

Meta's immediate goal is to create robots that can handle everyday household tasks. However, its larger vision is to lay the groundwork for an entire industry, similar to the way Android and Qualcomm reshaped the smartphone market. In its pursuit, Meta has already begun engaging with robotics firms, including Unitree Robotics and Figure AI Inc., though it has no plans to develop a Meta-branded robot for now.

The push into humanoid robotics aligns with similar projects by tech giants like Apple Inc. and Alphabet Inc.’s Google DeepMind. Meta believes its significant advances in AI and mixed-reality tech can help accelerate progress in this developing field. As Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s chief technology officer, explained in an internal memo, the company's existing technologies—such as hand tracking and always-on sensors—are critical to creating the next generation of humanoid robots. Meta’s ultimate aim is to provide the essential technologies and infrastructure for this new market.

With the backing of an experienced leader, Marc Whitten—who recently resigned from his role at General Motors’ self-driving division—the new team is poised to expand rapidly. Meta plans to hire 100 engineers this year to work on the project, further cementing its commitment to shaping the future of humanoid robotics.

The company sees this effort as a major leap, not only for the development of humanoids but also for its broader AI and augmented reality initiatives. While it may be a few years before humanoid robots become mainstream, Meta’s foray into the field is one to watch as it aims to reshape the robotics landscape.
