India is planning to ban sports betting and two other types of online games
The Minister of Information Technology of India, Rajiv Chandra Shekhar, has announced plans to ban three types of games in the country. The proposed bans will affect the following categories:
- All forms of betting: This includes sports betting, gambling games, and other forms of betting.
- Games causing addiction: This pertains to games that can lead to pathological addiction and have negative health consequences for players.
- Games causing harm: This category includes games that can cause physical, emotional, or psychological harm to players.
These restrictions will be applicable to the Play Store services by Google and the App Store by Apple, which are the primary platforms for distributing mobile games.
The emergence of these restriction measures is related to the increasing cases of gaming addiction in the country and reports of individuals changing their religious beliefs under the influence of certain online games. The Minister of Information Technology has expressed concern and believes that measures need to be taken to protect citizens from potential negative consequences of gaming addiction and harmful games.
