Naughty Dog has released the long-awaited update for The Last of Us: Part II on PlayStation 5. Patch 1.08 is out now and is available to digital and physical media owners for free.

The main innovation of the update is the enhanced performance mode. It is accessible through the options menu and allows you to choose between the standard 30 frames per second and the increased speed of 60 FPS. Also, the developers have reduced the download time. It is noted that all changes were made for backward compatibility.

Digital Foundry specialists have already tested the update. They got the following results:

  • Visually, the game hasn't changed compared to the PS4 Pro version. The resolution has not changed either - these are the same 2560 x 1440 pixels using the temporal anti-aliasing technique; 60 FPS mode is enabled by default, but it can be changed through the settings;
  • The claimed 60 FPS is stable without drawdown, except for the only case in a scene with a shootout on the roof of an abandoned skyscraper, where performance for some unknown reason floats in the region of 56-58 FPS. In the rest of the sequences of the game, such manifestations were not observed;
  • The wait for the initial load has been reduced by about half: from 91 seconds on the PS4 Pro to 43 seconds on the PS5.

Interestingly, Sony has also confirmed that, in addition to 60 frames for backward compatibility, there are other improvements to be expected for The Last of Us Part 2 on PS5 in the future:

Since the release of the PS5 system last year, our team has continued to explore its capabilities, and we look with hope to the future, which has a lot of interesting things in store for us. This update is just the first step towards improving the PS5 game. When we're ready to share more news, you'll be the first to know!

Recall that The Last of Us Part II was released on June 19, 2020 exclusively on the PlayStation.
