Mass Effect: Universe Would Have Allowed Players to Create Unique Alternative Timelines

Over the past few days, we’ve learned quite a bit about the fifth Mass Effect game, which is now canceled and halted after Electronic Arts officially shut down BioWare this week. The first details about the story and gameplay have come out, and we’ve even seen the debut trailer, which confirmed the subtitle “Universe.”

It seems we were in for a truly ambitious project. Just the other day, Romain Toutain, technical director of Mass Effect: Universe, effectively confirmed this by analyzing the leaked trailer in detail on his Twitch channel. He spoke in French, so a user named loustica-lucia added English subtitles on her Bluesky page, and thanks to that we learned a lot of new details about the game.

Toutain confirmed that the subtitle ‘Universe’ comes from the concept: the game was designed to let players create parallel timelines, similar to the Zero Time Dilemma series. Mass Effect: Universe was meant to fully incorporate the various endings and decisions from the original trilogy and weave them into one cohesive story through the manipulation of time and space. This gave players absolute freedom, and each playthrough would have differed a lot from the last, depending on their choices.

Mass Effect 5 is reportedly called “Universe” because it allows players to generate timelines based on choices from the original trilogy

This is according to Technical Director Romain Toutain, who emphasized that everyone would experience the same story, but past and in-game choices would shape each player's journey to be very different, rather than one default journey for all.

Such an ambitious project that honors the legendary trilogy should never go to waste.

Earlier, BioWare veteran Tony de Waal, who worked on the game, revealed Mass Effect: Universe was meant to offer players an incredible range of possibilities that no other game could provide. Judging by the timeline concept, that does seem to be the case. Meanwhile, insider named Dantics, who revealed the first details about the story and gameplay, claimed the studio was making Mass Effect for the fans, which shows how ambitious the project was supposed to be. Now that the alternate timelines concept is out, the petition to save the franchise will likely gather even more signatures. It has already collected over 170,000, up from 110,000 just yesterday.
