Amanita Design Announces Machinarium 2, 17 Years After the Original

Czech studio Amanita Design has announced Machinarium 2, the sequel to its cult 2009 adventure game. The game is coming to PC, and you can already add it to your wishlist on Steam and GOG. A release date has not been announced yet.

The sequel picks up after the ending of the first game. Robots Josef and Berta, who managed to escape the city, crash-land in a hidden valley. It is home to two robot tribes the residents of the Elektrona monastery and the city of Oilton. Both tribes are on the brink of survival as their power is running out.

Machinarium 2 will keep the classic point-and-click puzzle gameplay of the original. The main new feature is that you can now play as both Josef and Berta, switching between them at any time. Many puzzles will require the two heroes to work together. The game’s recognizable hand-drawn style also returns, and the music will once again be composed by Tomáš Dvořák, known as Floex.

In an interview with PC Gamer, studio founder Jakub Dvorský explained why Amanita Design decided to return to the series now:

We’re not getting any younger, and the world seems to be ending.

According to him, the idea for the sequel took shape gradually:

I just had this feeling that the world of the robots was knocking on the door, asking to come out again.

The first Machinarium was released in 2009 and became one of the most famous indie games of its time. Besides its gameplay, it was remembered for Floex’s soundtrack.
