PlatinumGames Wants to Expand the World of Bayonetta, but There's No Word on a New Game Yet

Bayonetta fans will have to wait a little longer for news about the series' future. In an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu, PlatinumGames head Atsushi Inaba didn't confirm that a new game is in development, but he made it clear that the studio has no plans to abandon the franchise.

The main question was the future of the Bayonetta series and how much longer fans will have to wait for a new game. When Inaba was asked about the series' future, he avoided giving a direct answer, but immediately added that PlatinumGames still wants to work with the character:

I can't really answer that right now. We have a strong desire to further develop the character of Bayonetta and expand her world. Please look forward to seeing what form that takes in the future.

Inaba also praised the Nintendo Switch 2, calling the console a platform with "tremendous potential." This could be a hint about the series' future, since the latest Bayonetta games were released exclusively on Nintendo consoles, with Nintendo serving as their publisher.

However, the studio seems to be facing a serious problem. Over the past few years, almost all of Bayonetta's key developers have left PlatinumGames:

  • Hideki Kamiya, the series' creator and the studio's co-founder, left in 2023;
  • Yusuke Miyata, director of Bayonetta 3;
  • Abebe Tinari, director of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon.

Kamiya now heads his own studio, Clovers, and is working on Okami 2. According to VGC, about 20 Bayonetta 3 developers, as well as composers from the original series, have joined his team. So the main question Inaba's statement leaves open is this: who at PlatinumGames will be able to create a new Bayonetta without the people who made the series what fans know and love.

The last full entry in the series, Bayonetta 3, was released in 2022 on Nintendo Switch, followed by the spin-off Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon in 2023. As a reminder, according to earlier insider report s, the company is already developing a fourth game in the series, which could be announced as early as the end of 2026.
