The Blood of Dawnwalker sequel might drop its controversial time mechanic

Rebel Wolves director and CEO Konrad Tomaszkiewicz has told Eurogamer that the studio hasn't decided whether the signature time mechanic that divided The Blood of Dawnwalker's players will return in future games in the series.

According to Tomaszkiewicz, the decision on the time mechanic will depend entirely on the specific story the studio tells in future installments. "We will play with it. If we will have parts of the story, or the whole story, to which it fits, then we will use it. If we will have stories where it does not fit, we will not force it," the director explained. He added that Rebel Wolves wants to use the system primarily to heighten tension at specific story moments, rather than treat it as a mandatory formula for every game the studio makes.

As a reminder, here's how the mechanic currently works: players are given 30 days and 30 nights to rescue Coen's family from the vampire Brencis. Time only advances when quests are completed or moved forward, and when players spend points on certain skills it doesn't drain during ordinary exploration or fights with wildlife.

Tomaszkiewicz doesn't deny that the system has drawn plenty of criticism from fans, and he acknowledges the existence of mods that remove the time limit entirely. Still, he encouraged players to try the game with the clock running first: according to him, Rebel Wolves balanced the project so that around 80 percent of the content can be completed even within the 30-day limit. The director also drew a parallel with the Witcher series, where branching story choices likewise prevent players from seeing every possible outcome in a single playthrough.

Despite The Blood of Dawnwalker having released only a few weeks ago on September 3, 2026 and having sold over a million copies within the first two to three days, Rebel Wolves has already begun searching for a lead writer to work on the next chapter of the saga. The game was conceived as the first story in a larger series of self-contained tales following Coen across different eras, and the studio also said it's researching "other crazy ideas" that could change how the studio's future RPGs feel.
