Ed Boon Confirmed Injustice 2 Sold Over 9 Million Copies

It has been almost three years since NetherRealm Studios’ last release, Mortal Kombat 1. Rumor has it that the studio’s next game will be Injustice 3, and ahead of a possible announcement, the head of NetherRealm has decided to share the latest sales figures for the second installment of the franchise, which was released back in 2017.

On the Bluesky social network, Ed Boon, head of NetherRealm Studios, reported that sales of Injustice 2 had reached over 9 million copies across all platforms. These are very impressive figures, considering that the abovementioned Mortal Kombat 1 had sold 1 million fewer copies by April 2026, though its sales figures may now be catching up with those of the second installment of Injustice. Boon shared this information in response to a user’s question about sales of superhero games and the debate over whether Injustice 2 was a financial flop—and judging by the latest figures, that certainly isn’t the case. His words can be seen below:

"Since we released Injustice 2, it has sold over 9 million copies worldwide."

As for Injustice 3, the game has not been officially confirmed, but rumors about it have been circulating for some time. For instance, earlier this year, a leak from a Warner Bros. Games artist confirmed that he was working on the game, as well as on Hogwarts Legacy 2 and two unannounced projects. However, Ed Boon has been silent on the third installment of the franchise—though, during an interview, he did confirm that NetherRealm is working on a new Mortal Kombat game.

The studio usually alternates between Injustice and Mortal Kombat releases, and following this logic, their next fighting game should be dedicated to superhero battles. And if the game is indeed in development, it’s not out of the question that it could be announced this month at Gamescom 2026—but that’s just speculation.
