A Fan-Made Mod Will Let Destiny 2 Players Walk Through the Vaulted Leviathan Raid Again

A modder known as Jesus MC is set to release a free mod that reopens the Leviathan raid and other locations Destiny 2 stripped out of the game years ago, built from files that predate the 2020 Beyond Light expansion.

What players get is closer to a museum tour than a raid clear. Enemies and NPCs don't spawn, raid mechanics don't function, and there's no way to bring in an existing Guardian or build a new one. Instead, the mod locks players into three pre-made characters pulled from Season of Arrivals, running old ammo economy rules and none of the subclasses Destiny 2 added since, including Stasis, Strand, and Prismatic. It still needs a working copy of Destiny 2 to launch, and the developer's use of AI tooling in the reconstruction hasn't been detailed beyond a brief mention, so how much of the raid gets rebuilt automatically versus by hand remains unclear at this stage.

Leviathan was Destiny 2's original raid at launch in 2017, and Bungie pulled it from the game as part of the Content Vault, a rotating removal system meant to keep the game's install size and content pool manageable. That system erased planets, strikes, and entire raids that players couldn't touch again through official means, and that gap is what this mod tries to fill outside Bungie's control. Bungie itself spent its final stretch of active development trying to keep the game fresh through rotating content, including a Rite of the Nine event that cycled weekly dungeons across three difficulty tiers the year before support ended.

That support ended for real reasons beyond a roadmap running out. Sony cut most of Bungie's Destiny development team after Destiny 2 stopped receiving updates and Marathon failed to hold its launch player base, leaving fewer people at the studio with any reason to revisit vaulted content officially.

I think a fan project filling this exact gap makes sense given who's left to do the work otherwise, since Bungie's own Destiny team is a fraction of what it used to be. I'd guess most of the appeal here isn't the mod itself so much as what it says about a live-service game once the studio has moved on, that the community ends up the only party still invested in what got left behind.

Nothing about the mod suggests Bungie is involved or has endorsed it, so anyone trying it should expect the usual risks that come with running unofficial tools against a live game.
