CD Projekt RED Confirmed Cyberpunk 2 Will Not Feature Third-Person Mode in Cutscenes
After the release of Cyberpunk 2077, one of the main criticisms from fans was the absence of a third-person view in cutscenes. CD Projekt RED decided to make the game fully first-person to help players immerse themselves more deeply in the game's world—and this was probably the right step. Nevertheless, a lot of gamers were hoping that the developers would include this option in the upcoming Cyberpunk 2; however, it seems that won't be the case.
In communication with followers on Bluesky, Cyberpunk 2's creative director Igor Sarzynski seemingly confirmed that the game will not include third-person cutscenes. According to him, from the very beginning, the studio decided to make Cyberpunk 2077's cutscenes from a first-person perspective so that players could be engaged as fully as possible with what's happening on the screen. He also added that if the cutscenes were made from a third-person perspective, it could disrupt the game's continuity, making it jarring and unnatural. Moreover, producing such cutscenes is far more resource-intensive. You can check out the key points from Sarzynski's posts below:
“Another thread on Reddit about how third-person cutscenes would've made the game better. I really wish anyone was specific for once - exactly which of the interactive first-person perspective scenes would've been better as a non-interactive old-school cutscene?
Not to mention that doing third-person cutscenes *only sometimes* would've been jarring as hell, I guarantee it. And third-person cutscenes for each scene are just, like, a completely different game. To wrap up the 'cinematic director for Cyberpunk 2077 rants!' - Doing interactive, nonlinear, real-time scenes with no cuts but camera and often movement freedom is 3x as difficult and expensive as doing old-school cutscenes. If we wanted to cut scope, we would do The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt-style scenes.”
This probably means that Cyberpunk 2, just like the original title, Cyberpunk 2077, will once again offer a first-person perspective, with no third-person elements. It's pretty unlikely that CD Projekt RED will follow Rockstar Games' approach of giving players the option to switch between first- and third-person perspectives, as in GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2—although the studio has not made any official statement on this matter yet.
As for Cyberpunk 2, the game is confirmed to feature a multiplayer mode, a new city inspired by Chicago, but players will once again be able to visit Night City. Netflix also recently released a new trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, which is set in the same universe as the video game and rumored to release this autumn. The release date for Cyberpunk 2 remains unknown; the game is confirmed to be in development for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
