The Lord of the Rings: Ascension Crowdfunding Begins on July 14
Fans of The Lord of the Rings have another tabletop adventure to look forward to. Stone Blade Entertainment has confirmed that The Lord of the Rings: Ascension, an officially licensed deckbuilding card game, will launch its crowdfunding campaign on July 14 via Gamefound.
Designed for 1–4 players, the game adapts J.R.R. Tolkien's legendary fantasy world using the acclaimed Ascension deckbuilding system.
The Lord of the Rings: Ascension is built on the mechanics of Stone Blade Entertainment's long-running Ascension series, which first debuted in 2010.
Players will build decks throughout each game, recruiting heroes, defeating enemies, and strengthening their strategy as the adventure unfolds.
The project will be released as three standalone volumes, with each game adapting one installment of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The campaign officially launches on July 14 through Gamefound.
While Stone Blade has yet to reveal pledge tiers or funding goals, the publisher has already announced a premium Deluxe Saga Collection.
The collector's edition will include:
- All three standalone games
- Premium game components
- Faux leather storage cases
- A matching faux leather slipcase inspired by the original editions of The Lord of the Rings novels
The announcement generated mixed reactions after Stone Blade shared early artwork featuring characters such as Frodo, Gandalf, Gimli, and Mordor.
While many fans welcomed the project itself, some criticized the visual direction, describing parts of the artwork as overly cartoonish and lacking depth or color contrast.
Rather than ignoring the feedback, Stone Blade quickly responded by showcasing an updated version of the Frodo artwork.
The revised illustration improves the character's visibility by removing distracting background elements and refining the overall composition.
Stone Blade says the crowdfunding process gives both developers and players an opportunity to improve the game together before release.
Also, as previously reported, Warhorse Studios is working on two new games —a new Kingdom Come title and a Lord of the Rings RPG.
I can see the project's collaborative approach becoming one of its biggest strengths, especially for longtime Lord of the Rings fans who care deeply about faithful visual representation.
The Lord of the Rings: Ascension begins crowdfunding on July 14, with retail release details expected to be announced after the Gamefound campaign concludes.
