Jason Blundell Founded New Studio, Magic Fractal, as a Result of Dark Outlaw Games' Closure

If you need an example of how someone tries and strives for success time and time again, Jason Blundell, former developer of the Call of Duty zombie mode, is a perfect case in point. The bottom line is that while two game studios he founded were closed, that didn't stop him from launching a third gaming division.

This March, PlayStation announced the closure of Dark Outlaw Games, led by Jason Blundell, which reportedly developed a new AAA IP that now is seemingly cancelled. It was a second studio shut down, where Blundell was in charge—the first one, Deviation Games, which wasn’t, unlike Dark Outlaw Games, owned by the company but claimed to develop another title for PlayStation 5.

During the recent appearance on JCbackfire’s live stream, James Blundell confirmed and announced he has established a new studio— Magic Fractal. Since the studio has only just been formed, it is too early to talk about developing any specific game, but Blundell also stated that if this studio were to be closed for any reason, he would subsequently form another one.

“Third time’s the charm. And if not, it’s the fourth time.”

Blundell also revealed some details on Dark Outlaw Games’ title during the conversation with JCbackfire stream. Specifically, he clarified that it wasn’t a live-service game, despite previous rumors, and the fans “would have been very excited”. Unfortunately, there is a chance we will never know official details about this title.

Since 2009, more than 10 studios have been shut down by PlayStation, including Firewalk Studios (Concord), London Studio, Neon Koi, Evolution Studios, and more. This year, Bluepoint Games and Dark Outlaws Games have been added to the collection, and PlayStation fans are hopeful some familiar companies like Bend Studio, who are reportedly working on a new exclusive for PlayStation 5, won’t be shut down.
