Sony is Betting on a New Live-Service Shooter, Fairgames
After the release of Marathon last month, a new extraction shooter developed by Bungie (Destiny), Sony is reportedly looking to focus on a new live-service game—Fairgames, which is developed by Haven Studios.
Fairgames was first revealed in 2023, but since then we've heard that the game has suffered some development troubles, while also testers didn’t enjoy the early version of gameplay, and Jade Reymond, the founder of Haven Studios, left the company last year. However, despite the obstacles, according to the new report from Insider Gaming, Sony will continue to invest in Fairgames and the game will also receive a new mode—Cargo Heist. You can check out the description of Cargo Heist mode below:
Break In – Find a vault code to gain access to the safe. Collect cash, upgrade your skillset, and make your play.
Drill – The vault is breached. Be the team to grab the cargo, or set up your strategy to intercept it.
Extract – The Cargo must be brought to the Extraction Site. Use the Extraction device to call your ride home. If your team fails to extract cargo, use another exit to Getaway.
The game is also expected to be fully free-to-play, which could attract new players—something Sony is likely hoping for. However, we saw the examples of how free-to-play extraction shooters may be a disappointment—some games like Ubisoft’s XDefiant or this year’s Highguard (which is already shut down) are making themselves felt. And given the fact that Fairgames reportedly facing development challenges and early reviews have been mixed, this could turn out to be a very risky project for PlayStation.
