Edmund McMillen Teases Mewgenics Console Ports For PlayStation 5 And Switch 2
The turn-based cat-breeding roguelite Mewgenics has begun its transition to console platforms following a successful initial release on PC via Steam. Developers Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel recently signaled that versions for the PlayStation 5 and the Nintendo Switch 2 are currently in active development. On March 25, McMillen shared footage of the game running on a Switch 2 development kit and noted that the performance appeared stable for the hybrid hardware.
After 14 years in development, Mewgenics debuted on Steam and instantly reached the number one spot on the global top sellers list. The tactics game from Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel surpassed major releases like Counter-Strike 2 and Helldivers 2, recouping its entire development budget in only three hours.
Executive producer Tyrone Rodriguez followed this update by posting a video of the title running natively on a PS5 console while being played with a DualSense hardware interface. These videos demonstrate the current state of the ports, which McMillen described as looking and sounding fine during early testing.
The game reached a significant commercial milestone during its first week of availability, selling more than one million copies. It surpassed established industry giants and highly anticipated releases such as Counter-Strike 2, PUBG, Helldivers 2, and Arc Raiders to become the number one global top seller on the Steam platform. Financial results indicate that the project recouped its entire development budget within three hours of its digital release, a feat that stunned the creators. This rapid success follows a lengthy development cycle that spanned 14 years. The title currently maintains an all-time peak of 115,428 concurrent players and a 24-hour peak of 27,290 users.
For the Switch 2, this will be a good addition among indie games, but I am especially interested to see and touch the game on PS5 while Slay the Spire 2 has not yet been ported. While the game has achieved high critical standing with 91 percent Very Positive reviews, the developers stated that the first DLC and official mod support will not be released for some time. The studio currently prioritizes technical stability and platform expansion to reach a wider audience of gamers across multiple ecosystems. The game has already demonstrated strong performance on handheld PC devices like the Steam Deck, which simplifies the technical requirements for the upcoming Switch 2 porting effort.
Overall, games like Mewgenics, surprisingly enough, fit very well on the PS5 and I think this time is no exception. This console expansion provides a significant increase to the library of tactical roguelites on modern hardware. Although an Xbox Series X/S version has not been officially confirmed in the recent developer updates, industry observers anticipate an announcement in the future. The current transparency from the development team regarding the progress of the PS5 and Switch 2 builds offers a rare look at the porting cycle before formal marketing begins. The game continues to draw immense player interest through its unique tactical mechanics and focus on feline genetics.
