Nvidia CEO Fires Back at DLSS 5 Critics, Calls Complaints “Completely Wrong”

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has responded sharply to criticism surrounding the recently unveiled DLSS 5 technology, dismissing negative reactions as “completely wrong.” His comments come shortly after the reveal, highlighting how quickly feedback from the gaming community has reached the company.

DLSS 5 is the latest evolution of Nvidia’s AI-powered upscaling technology, designed for RTX graphics cards. While previous versions focused on improving performance by enhancing lower-resolution images, the newest iteration introduces a more advanced approach using generative AI. However, early demonstrations—featuring titles like Resident Evil Requiem—have sparked backlash, with some players arguing that the visuals resemble overly processed, AI-generated imagery.

Addressing these concerns in an interview with Tom’s Hardware, Huang emphasized that DLSS 5 operates differently from traditional generative AI. According to him, the technology combines AI with direct control over in-game geometry and textures, allowing developers to fine-tune how it behaves. He described it as “generative control at the geometry level,” rather than simple post-processing, and stressed that studios have full flexibility in how they implement it.

Huang also suggested that DLSS 5 could be used creatively beyond visual enhancement, enabling developers to experiment with unique styles, such as toon shading or entirely new material effects. He referred to the system as “content-control generative AI,” positioning it as a tool for artistic direction rather than automated image generation.

Despite these explanations, skepticism remains. Early comparisons have drawn criticism for noticeably altering character appearances, with some players pointing to changes in facial features, lighting, and even hair details. Concerns have also been fueled by broader frustrations around AI in gaming, including rising hardware costs and component shortages driven by demand for AI infrastructure.

With DLSS 5 expected to launch later this year, Nvidia still has time to refine the technology and address player concerns. However, accessibility may remain an issue, as current demonstrations rely on extremely high-end hardware, putting the experience out of reach for most players—for now.
