Resident Evil Requiem Director Explained Why Chris Redfield Isn’t the Game’s Main Character
Resident Evil Requiem, which is set to release next February, will include two protagonists—Leon S. Kennedy, who is making his comeback since Resident Evil 6, and Grace Ashcroft—an entirely new character and the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft from Resident Evil Outbreak.
Some fans may have thought Chris Redfield, yet another iconic Resident Evil character, will be the main character of Resident Evil Requiem, considering his important role in the previous title, Resident Evil Village. However, in the interview with Future Games Show, the game’s director Koshi Nakanashi reveals why Capcom decided to make new protagonists in the newest installment, as you can check below:
"I think it's a common experience with Resident Evil games where we don't exactly pick up the exact thread that was left on the previous game. You know, Resident Evil 6 ended on a sort of tease of Jake, the character from that game, possibly seeing where he might go next and then Resident Evil 7 was totally different protagonist for example.
So there's a lot of parallel threads in motion and I think we just choose where we're going to focus our spotlight at any given time. It doesn't mean those other characters aren't out there somewhere, sort of getting on with business but we're just not showing you just yet. So although at the end of Village we saw Chris Redfield with the BSAA in action, we decided to return to the more general mainline story of the series for this entry. So it's looking towards Raccoon City and kind of, after so many years not having seen this location, catching up on where we're at with that and picking that up as the main thread.
So rest assured that I'm sure Chris is out in action somewhere in the world, but for now we're not really looking at him and we're looking at somewhere different.”
Chris Redfield is yet to be confirmed to make his appearance in Resident Evil Requiem, and it’s currently unknown whether it will happen or whether he will be mentioned in the game.
Resident Evil Requiem will release on February 27 on PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
