First Look At Sophie Turner As Lara Croft In Amazon's New Tomb Raider Series
Amazon released the first images of Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in the new Tomb Raider series. This marks a new chapter for the character in live-action. I remember the impact of Angelina Jolie’s two films, and later I played the rebooted games that led to Alicia Vikander’s turn in the role. Now, Turner, widely known from Game of Thrones, steps into the adventurer’s boots. The project is backed by significant talent. Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who earned Emmy, Golden Globe, and BAFTA awards for her work on Fleabag, serves as the writer and executive producer for the show. The initial images show a faithful take on the iconic character, suggesting a direction that respects the source material while moving it forward.
The cast extends beyond its lead, featuring names that add weight to the production. Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs are confirmed for the series, joined by Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, and John Heffernan. The full scope of their roles remains under wraps, but their involvement signals a commitment to a high-caliber production. This news arrives in tandem with major announcements for the video game franchise. At The Game Awards, two new titles were revealed. The first, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, is a reimagining of the original game that started it all. The second, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, is an entirely new adventure set in Northern India, with a planned release in 2027.

The connection between the Amazon series and the new games is a deliberate strategy. Crystal Dynamics boss Scott Amos discussed the vision for a unified, cross-media franchise (from the interview by VGC).
We will say that certainly our Amazon partners have been tremendous. From the beginning, they’ve gotten the idea of this vision we have for this cross-media franchise across both the live-action things during the series and the two games that we’re making right now. We’re not here to talk about any details or anything else in the future about the TV series until later on. But certainly, it’s a great opportunity for us to have all of these things going together and having so many things in development for Tomb Raider. The fans benefit from all of it.

When I played the original game, its brutal, trial-and-error traps were a defining feature. Modern games typically steer away from such punishing design. The question of whether Legacy of Atlantis would preserve this difficulty for authenticity or adopt a more forgiving style was put to the development team.
Part of reimagining a game is adjusting that game, evolving for modern player tastes. But, it is core to the Tomb Raider experience that there are puzzles and combat and traversal and death-defying action. If you look at the trailer that we had for Legacy of Atlantis, you’ll see big rolling balls and the things that you expect in a Tomb Raider game are going to be there.

This suggests a balance between nostalgic challenge and contemporary design, aiming to satisfy both veteran fans and newcomers. The combined effort across television and gaming points to a major revival for the franchise, centering on a single, cohesive vision of Lara Croft for the first time. The focus appears to be on building a lasting and interconnected world.
Read also, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis was formally unveiled at The Game Awards as a full reimagining of the 1996 original, marking the franchise’s return to its starting point ahead of its 30th anniversary. Crystal Dynamics confirmed the game is scheduled for release in 2026 and rebuilt entirely in Unreal Engine 5. The project sits alongside a second title, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, planned for 2027, positioning the series for a multi-year revival anchored by a single, unified version of Lara Croft.
