Full GTA: San Andreas Experience Is Being Rebuilt In GTA 5’s RAGE Engine
GTA: San Andreas is being rebuilt in full inside Grand Theft Auto 5’s RAGE Engine through a new fan project called GTA: San Andreas NextGen Edition. The mod is being developed by the Revolution Team, the group previously responsible for GTA Vice City NextGen Edition. According to the team, the project aims to recreate the entire 2004 game within GTA 5, not as a map conversion, but as a complete playable experience.
The scope of the project mirrors the team’s earlier Vice City effort. GTA: San Andreas NextGen Edition is designed to include every mission, character, vehicle, and piece of original content from the classic release. Rather than extracting locations or individual systems, the developers are porting the full structure of the game into Rockstar’s modern RAGE Engine, effectively functioning as a technical remaster built on GTA 5’s foundation.
A short teaser trailer has been released to mark the announcement. The footage is minimal and limited to the well-known opening cutscene reference that longtime players associate with the game. No gameplay systems, environments, or technical upgrades are shown. The team has positioned the video as a confirmation of the project’s existence rather than a demonstration of progress.
Despite the lack of detailed footage, Revolution Team has stated that the internal version of the mod is already playable from beginning to end. This suggests that the core content conversion is largely complete. However, public communication around the project is expected to remain limited.
That caution stems from the fate of GTA Vice City NextGen Edition. Earlier this year, Take-Two Interactive issued takedowns against trailers and download links associated with that mod. As a result, Revolution Team stopped publicly distributing Vice City NextGen Edition, making it difficult to find legitimate download sources. No legal action was publicly detailed, but the removals were broad enough to effectively halt open access to the project.
Given that history, GTA: San Andreas NextGen Edition is likely to follow a similar path. There is currently no estimated release date, no public builds, and no download links. The team has not confirmed how or if the mod will be officially distributed once it reaches a releasable state.
At the same time, the Vice City mod scene continues to adapt. GTA Trilogy Games recently released a new trailer for Grand Theft Auto Vice City Actual NextGen Edition, a standalone project derived from the original Vice City NextGen work. Unlike the earlier version, this mod does not require the original Vice City NextGen Edition files and can be used independently within GTA 5’s RAGE Engine.
A download link for the Actual NextGen Edition mod is currently available. Based on recent enforcement trends, its availability may be temporary. Previous projects of similar scope have been removed with little notice, and there is no indication that this one is exempt from the same scrutiny.
