Hideki Kamiya Wants Hideo Kojima to Make a New P.T.-Style Horror Game

Hideki Kamiya, best known as the creator of Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, and director of Resident Evil 2, has shared his thoughts on one of gaming’s most infamous cancellations — Silent Hills. The game, revealed through the legendary P.T. demo in 2014, was meant to be a collaboration between Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro, with Norman Reedus starring. However, following Kojima’s fallout with Konami, the project was shelved in 2015 and the demo was delisted from the PlayStation Store, cementing its legacy as both a cult phenomenon and a painful “what if” in the history of horror games.

Kamiya addressed the subject on social media earlier this week. When asked about the chances of a return to the style of P.T., he made his position clear.

"If it's impossible to resurrect P.T., Kojima should make a new game in the same style," Kamiya said. "If Kojima doesn't do it, maybe I'll give it a go. I hate horror, though, so it wouldn't be horror... plus, I have no ideas." — Hideki Kamiya

Despite his history with Resident Evil and the gothic tones of Devil May Cry, Kamiya openly admitted that he dislikes horror as a genre, even finding P.T. too frightening to play alone. His statement highlights both the respect he holds for Kojima’s short-lived experiment and the recognition of its ongoing influence.

Hideo Kojima commented on Death Stranding 3. Hideo Kojima responded to questions regarding the release of Death Stranding 3, stating that he has already conceived a concept for the new installment but does not currently plan to work on its development. During an interview in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) as part of the Death Stranding 2 world tour, he was asked about a possible third part. He replied that the ending of Death Stranding 2 served as a conclusion for the first and second games, but the concept for the third already exists — and he hopes someone else can bring it to life. Let's go back to Sillent Hill...

The cancellation of Silent Hills left a noticeable gap in the horror market, which other developers have since tried to fill. Titles such as The Exit 8, released in 2023, have drawn inspiration from P.T.’s looping, unsettling corridor design. While Kamiya himself has pointed out that these projects do not reach the same level of tension or originality, the fact that the genre is now sometimes referred to as “P.T.-like” speaks to the impact of Kojima and del Toro’s abandoned vision.

Kojima has not returned directly to the P.T. style, but his upcoming project OD, first teased in 2023, promises to push boundaries in horror design. A collaboration with filmmaker Jordan Peele, OD aims to test the limits of fear itself and experiment with how players respond to psychological tension. While gameplay details remain scarce, Kojima has emphasized that the game will be unlike anything players have seen before.

The announcement of OD raised questions about whether it might serve as a spiritual successor to P.T., especially since Kojima has a history of evolving his ideas across projects when circumstances prevent a direct continuation. Early leaks suggested a third-person perspective in abandoned environments, while Kojima himself has described the project as one that could divide audiences for years to come.

Kamiya’s comments add another layer to the ongoing fascination with what Silent Hills might have been. His willingness to “give it a go” if Kojima does not revisit the concept appears more tongue-in-cheek than a genuine announcement, especially since he is currently focused on Okami 2 at his new development studio. Nonetheless, his remarks reinforce the perception that even among Japan’s top creators, P.T. remains a benchmark for horror storytelling in games.

For Kojima, the next opportunity to shed light on OD and other future projects will come at the “Beyond The Strand” anniversary event celebrating Kojima Productions’ 10th year. Given his tendency to blend cinematic storytelling with gameplay innovation, many fans will be watching closely to see if OD carries any of the DNA of P.T., or if it marks an entirely new chapter in his career.

According to an IndieWire interview, Kojima Productions’ leader explained that the facial capture rigs used in Death Stranding 2 advanced so much that they spent about two years just learning the technology. The new systems captured very subtle facial expressions, which allowed Kojima to remove some voice lines to let the actors’ emotions do more of the storytelling. “I kind of even changed the scenes where I’d take out some lines because facial expressions could be covered, and I kind of make that decision on the spot,” Kojima said.
