MachineGames Hints at a Possible Third Wolfenstein Game
A new documentary has sparked speculation that MachineGames may be working on the long-awaited third mainline entry in its Wolfenstein series. While there’s no official confirmation yet, recent comments from the studio’s director suggest that fans of the alternate-history shooter might still have something to look forward to.
A Long Wait for a Sequel
The Wolfenstein franchise has been pivotal in shaping the modern FPS genre, but it hasn’t seen a new mainline entry in years. The last installment, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, released in 2017, followed by the 2019 co-op spin-off Wolfenstein: Youngblood. Since then, the silence has left fans wondering if the series had been quietly shelved.
“We’re Not Done Yet”
In a Noclip documentary exploring the making of Wolfenstein, MachineGames’ Studio Head and Game Director Jerk Gustafsson revealed that the studio always envisioned its Wolfenstein saga as a trilogy. He further hinted that the team is “not done with Wolfenstein yet” and still has “a story to tell.”
This aligns with comments from a Bethesda executive back in 2018, who stated the company was “absolutely” planning a third entry. While the long silence since then has been discouraging, Gustafsson’s words reignite hope that the trilogy might still be completed.
Uncertainty Behind the Scenes
That said, Gustafsson carefully phrased his comments, noting he “hopes” the studio’s work on Wolfenstein isn’t finished. This suggests MachineGames may have a story and direction in mind but may not yet have the green light from Bethesda or other stakeholders.
Earlier in 2025, reports surfaced that MachineGames had canceled an unannounced project between 2022 and 2024. Some speculated this might have been Wolfenstein 3, but the timing of Gustafsson’s remarks implies the long-awaited sequel may still be alive—just not ready to be revealed.
Wolfenstein Expands Beyond Games
Even if the future of the game series remains uncertain, fans won’t be left completely in the dark. Amazon has confirmed that a Wolfenstein TV series is in development, led by Maniac and Station Eleven creator Patrick Somerville. The project also involves Jonah Nolan (Fallout, Westworld) and Gustafsson himself.
For now, Gustafsson’s hints provide only a glimmer of hope rather than solid confirmation. Until Bethesda or MachineGames makes an official announcement, fans should temper their expectations—but keep their fingers crossed.
