Launched in 2023 as a full reboot of the iconic franchise, MK1 earned an 84 average score on OpenCritic and generally positive reviews. However, parts of the fanbase criticized it for a lack of content compared to previous entries and issues with online play.

📈 Mortal Kombat 1 Sales Pass 6.2 Million

According to Boon (via PC Gamer), Mortal Kombat 1 has sold over 6.2 million copies, surpassing other major genre releases like:

  • Street Fighter 6 – 5 million sold
  • Tekken 8 – 3 million sold

While it still trails Mortal Kombat X (12M) and MK11 (15M) in lifetime numbers, MK1 holds the top spot for current-gen fighting games. The only serious contender to dethrone it is Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, which reached 5M copies in 3 months, though no updated figures have been shared in half a year.

📉 Content Support Winds Down

The sales milestone comes just months after NetherRealm confirmed in May that Mortal Kombat 1 will no longer receive DLC content. The studio will still release balance patches and bug fixes, but the focus has shifted to its next project.

Earlier in 2025, Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition was shadow-dropped, signaling the beginning of the end for new content. During its active cycle, the game received two character packs and the Khaos Reigns expansion.

🔮 The Road Ahead for Mortal Kombat

Whether MK1 can hold onto its crown remains to be seen. Fans are eager to find out how NetherRealm will approach the next Mortal Kombat and whether it can recapture the explosive popularity of its predecessors.
