Predecessor returns to original Paragon map in new Legacy Mode

Predecessor, the free-to-play third-person MOBA, is going back to its roots. Developer Omeda Studios announced that the game will reintroduce the original Paragon map, Agora, for a limited time in its upcoming Legacy Mode. This nostalgic return arrives as part of patch 1.7, which is set to go live on July 22.

The move follows a clear trend in the live-service space: giving players what they remember and what they keep asking for. Fortnite made its original map a permanent mode after the huge success of Fortnite OG last year, and now Predecessor is borrowing the same playbook.

Predecessor originally launched in August 2024 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC after rising from the ashes of Epic Games ’ Paragon, which shut down in 2018. The new game was started by content creator Robbie Singh, who pulled together Paragon’s open-sourced assets and created Omeda Studios to give the project a second life.

Agora, the original map from Paragon, has been in high demand from players. While Predecessor already offers a modern twist on classic MOBA gameplay — think League of Legends-style lanes but in third-person — this map brings back the exact atmosphere that longtime fans remember.

“The Agora map holds a special place in the hearts of OG Paragon players because it was their first introduction to that world, a world that felt vast, immersive, and alive in a way other MOBAs, constrained by isometric perspectives, simply couldn't replicate,” said Robbie Singh.

In Legacy Mode, players can dive into this classic map with the current Predecessor mechanics and roster, which now features over 40 heroes. The patch also brings a new hero to the mix — Renna, a dark magic caster with a blood-red design — plus new skins and a range of gameplay fixes. Legacy Mode is a time-limited event, but the studio hasn’t said exactly how long it’ll stay available.

Singh said Predecessor has been shaped by the community from the beginning, and the decision to bring back Agora was driven directly by player feedback. He also highlighted the game’s verticality and pace as major points of difference from traditional MOBAs.

“We believe we've found a great blend of fast-paced action and deep strategy, doubling down on the things players care about most, like increased verticality and fluid combat, while introducing an augment system that gives players unprecedented freedom to shape their playstyle.”

The addition of Legacy Mode isn’t just a fun throwback — it’s also a strategic move. Live-service games like Fortnite, Warzone, and League of Legends have found major success in reviving old content and letting players relive earlier experiences. Fortnite’s return to its OG map last November set new records, hitting 44.7 million players in a single day. That mode has since become a permanent feature, with Epic Games rotating through its first ten seasons to keep it fresh.

This kind of nostalgia cycle taps into a simple reality: players often want to return to the games they remember, and if those memories are linked to specific maps or gameplay styles, the demand can be massive. Fortnite's OG mode is proof that even years-old content can drive engagement like nothing else — and other live-service games are following that example closely.

Predecessor isn't the only one joining the nostalgia trend. With over 70 percent of PS5 and Xbox players in the U.S. sticking to the top 10 live-service titles, and more than 40 percent of console playtime going to those same games, the market shows a clear preference for familiar, well-supported experiences. Fortnite, Roblox, League of Legends, Minecraft, and GTA 5 continue to dominate player time, making it tough for new games to break in without a strong hook or existing fan base.

That’s exactly why Predecessor’s Paragon roots are so valuable. By leaning into the nostalgia that already exists around Agora, Omeda Studios is hoping to do more than just keep the servers busy — they’re aiming to build something that can stand alongside the giants.

Paragon may have shut down seven years ago, but the world it introduced hasn’t been forgotten. Predecessor has already gained a dedicated following, and with regular hero additions, a community-driven feedback loop, and competitive support, it’s quietly building a strong live-service presence.

Singh is confident that the formula is working. He pointed to the steady growth of the player base, regular content updates, and ongoing tweaks to gameplay systems as proof that Predecessor is more than just a revival — it’s a full evolution.

The return to Agora, however, is more than just fan service. It’s part of a larger move in the industry where developers recognize that what worked before can work again, especially when it’s polished and backed by modern tech. Predecessor runs on Unreal Engine, and the studio has used that to push its unique third-person MOBA experience even further.

Fortnite showed that nostalgia isn't just powerful — it's profitable. And in a live-service space that's increasingly crowded and competitive, reusing and improving beloved content might be the best way forward. Whether or not Predecessor follows Fortnite’s footsteps in making Agora a permanent mode will depend on player feedback and numbers. But for now, fans will get to walk through those old lanes one more time, with better visuals, more heroes, and a game that's learning how to grow by looking backward.
