Magic: The Gathering Teams Up with Sonic the Hedgehog for Secret Lair Crossover

Magic: The Gathering has unveiled an exciting new collaboration, joining forces with SEGA to bring Sonic the Hedgehog to the world’s most iconic trading card game. As part of its rapidly growing Universes Beyond initiative, Wizards of the Coast continues to expand Magic's multiverse with major pop culture crossovers—and Sonic is the latest franchise to get the special treatment.

🚀 Secret Lair x Sonic the Hedgehog Set Arrives July 14

The upcoming Secret Lair drop will feature three unique Sonic-themed sets, each packed with fan-favorite characters and fast-paced flavor. As revealed, the collaboration introduces brand-new cards alongside reimagined classics, giving Magic players a chance to race into battle with the Blue Blur and his iconic allies.

The first set, titled "Turbo Gear," puts a Sonic spin on popular Artifact cards:

• Swiftfoot Boots become "Air Shoes"
• Lightning Greaves are rebranded as "Power Sneakers"
• Hammer of Nazahn returns as "Piko Piko Hammer", inspired by Amy Rose’s signature weapon

These reprints—some of which are high-value cards in Magic’s secondary market—will cater to both collectors and competitive players, especially those who enjoy mechanics like Haste and Flash that match Sonic's lightning-fast theme.

🌍 Magic Expands Its Multiverse

2025 has already been a landmark year for crossovers in Magic: The Gathering. Starting with Final Fantasy, Universes Beyond sets are now Standard-legal, blending iconic franchises with the core gameplay more than ever before. Additional sets featuring Spider-Man and Avatar: The Last Airbender are also on the horizon.

At MagicCon Las Vegas, Wizards teased even more to come:

• The debut of Aang from Avatar in his fully-realized form
• A return of the coveted shock lands in the upcoming Edge of Eternities expansion
