The last time Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja shared sales statistics for the Nioh series was in October 2022, when 7 million copies were sold. It took both titles a little over two and a half years to reach the 8 million mark.

Currently, Team Ninja studio, together with PlatinumGames, is working on Ninja Gaiden 4. The game is scheduled for release in autumn 2025.

Nioh is an action RPG with a historical twist. The game's events take place in Japan during the Sengoku period. The main character is based on William Adams, an English navigator who played a significant role in Japanese history.

The game received mostly positive reviews from critics, with an average Metacritic score of 88/100 for the PS4 version and 84/100 for the PC version. Most reviewers praised the combat system, difficulty, and setting, which blended well with Japanese folklore and aesthetics. The game's visual style and the option to choose between different graphical modes on PlayStation 4 were also noted as highlights. However, the storyline and inventory management received some criticism.
