Fortnite’s Save the World Mode May Finally Be Coming to Nintendo Switch 2
After years of speculation, Fortnite’s original PvE mode, Save the World, could finally make its way to Nintendo consoles. A recent discovery in the game’s code referencing the Nintendo Switch 2's Joy-Con mouse functionality has reignited hopes that the long-absent mode may soon arrive on Nintendo’s upcoming system.
Fortnite on Switch: A Complicated Start
Fortnite launched on the Nintendo Switch in June 2018, but its debut wasn’t without issues. Initially, players faced significant restrictions—most notably, PlayStation users were unable to access their existing accounts on the Switch due to Sony’s limitations on cross-progression and cross-play. As a result, many were forced to create entirely new accounts if they wanted to play on Nintendo’s hybrid console or on Xbox.
Fortunately, this restriction was lifted when Sony eventually allowed cross-platform compatibility. In 2019, Epic Games introduced account merging, enabling players to combine their V-Bucks and cosmetics from multiple accounts—resolving one of the most frustrating early hurdles for Switch users.
The Absence of Save the World on Switch
Despite these improvements, one glaring omission remains to this day: the Save the World mode has never been made available on the Nintendo Switch. Over the years, players have held out hope as occasional rumors and leaks hinted at its arrival—but none ever materialized.
This absence has long puzzled fans, especially considering Fortnite’s strong presence on the platform. Many believe the reason lies in Save the World’s demanding hardware requirements and Epic Games’ waning support for the mode. In recent years, the studio has shifted its focus heavily toward the Battle Royale and Creative experiences, leaving Save the World with minimal updates and attention.
New Leak Hints at Save the World on Switch 2
Now, a recent leak may signal a change. Renowned Fortnite leaker iFireMonkey uncovered references in the game’s data suggesting that mouse support for the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers is being implemented. Interestingly, the code also directly references Save the World—but marks mouse input for the mode as "disabled."
This has sparked speculation within the community. Some fans interpret the inclusion of Save the World in the codebase as a strong indication that Epic is preparing the mode for a debut on the Switch 2. The fact that it's referenced at all suggests at least some level of internal testing or planning.
However, the detail that mouse features are disabled for this mode stands out. On platforms that support keyboard and mouse, mouse functionality is generally universal. Its absence here raises questions—though it could simply reflect the early stage of development or testing limitations specific to the platform.
A Long-Awaited Arrival?
It remains unclear why Epic never brought Save the World to the original Switch. Many believe it was due to performance concerns, as the mode demands more system resources than Battle Royale and had already seen reduced developer support. Given that Switch hardware lags behind other modern consoles, it may not have been deemed worth the investment at the time.
But the more powerful Switch 2 could change that. If the new system can handle the demands of Save the World, Epic may see an opportunity to finally bring the full Fortnite experience to Nintendo fans. For now, nothing has been officially confirmed—but the signs are more promising than ever.
