Square Enix Cancels Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link for Android and iOS

Square Enix has officially pulled the plug on Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, the ambitious GPS-based action RPG originally announced in April 2022. After a prototype test in Japan and a closed beta in select regions, the project’s development has now been cancelled. The game was initially scheduled for a 2024 release but was later delayed—and now, permanently shelved.

What Was Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link?

For those unfamiliar, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was set to expand the beloved Kingdom Hearts universe by bridging the narrative between Union χ and Dark Road. Players would have been able to explore the world of Scala ad Caelum either by physically moving in the real world using GPS or through traditional on-screen controls.

It was shaping up to be an innovative blend of mobile technology and action RPG gameplay, promising an all-new story experience within the Kingdom Hearts lore. Sadly, that vision will never be realized.

Why Was It Cancelled?

The development team broke the news via X (formerly Twitter), explaining that despite their efforts, they ultimately concluded that it would be difficult to “offer a service that players will find satisfactory over a long period of time.”

This decision effectively ends the game’s journey before it ever officially began.

Looking Ahead: Kingdom Hearts IV in Development

While the cancellation comes as a disappointment to many, there’s still a silver lining. Square Enix confirmed that the Kingdom Hearts franchise is far from over. The team is now fully focused on developing Kingdom Hearts IV, reassuring fans that more adventures lie ahead.

“We are hard at work on KINGDOM HEARTS IV,” the developers stated.

Fan Reactions: Disappointment and Dark Humor

The announcement has stirred a variety of responses across the community. Some fans are understandably disappointed, while others have reacted with a dose of internet sarcasm. One Reddit user quipped, “And nothing of value was lost,” while another added, “These EoS (End of Service) speedruns are getting faster and faster.”

Regardless of where you stand, it’s a bittersweet moment for fans who were eager to experience something fresh within the Kingdom Hearts universe.
