Apple Pay Officially Comes to PS5, Making Game Purchases Easier Than Ever

Sony has officially integrated Apple Pay into the PlayStation 5, offering users a seamless new way to buy games and digital content directly from the console. This marks the first time Apple’s popular payment system is natively available on PS5, going beyond its previous limited use through the PlayStation App or web browser.

A Long-Awaited Feature Arrives on PS5

Apple Pay is one of the world’s leading digital payment platforms, known for its convenience and security across Apple devices. Until now, PS5 users had to rely on external platforms — like the mobile app or browser-based store — to use it. With this update, Apple Pay is now fully integrated into the PS5’s native checkout system.

As reported by 9to5Mac, players can choose Apple Pay during checkout, triggering a QR code on-screen. Scanning it with an iPhone or iPad opens Apple Pay’s interface, allowing users to confirm purchases using Face ID or Touch ID. This capability was made possible by updates in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, which added support for QR-based authorization on third-party platforms like PlayStation.

Why It Matters for Players

While using Apple Pay adds a small extra step compared to traditional card payments, it offers clear advantages for Apple users. For example, those with an Apple Card can earn 2% Daily Cash on purchases — a nice perk considering the rising cost of games and DLC.

This update is exclusive to the PlayStation 5 for now, but a rollout to the PS4 is likely in the future. Apple Pay is available in 53 countries, so availability depends on regional support. Players can check Sony’s support page for details. In addition to Apple Pay, PS5 users still have access to other digital payment options like PayPal, Venmo, and Cash App — platforms that have been supported since earlier console generations.

A Sign of the Times

Sony’s move reflects a broader trend in gaming toward digital-first ecosystems and mobile-driven, contactless payments. With physical game sales continuing to decline and digital-only consoles gaining ground, adding Apple Pay is a step toward streamlining the purchasing experience for today’s players.

This update not only modernizes the PlayStation Store but also positions Sony to meet the expectations of a growing number of users who prioritize convenience, security, and mobile compatibility.
