In a message to fans, Rockstar expressed regret over the delay, stating:

Hi everyone,

Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026.

We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game.

With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve. We look forward to sharing more information with you soon.

Sincerely, Rockstar Games

Originally planned for a fall 2025 release, the delay pushes the launch by roughly six months. The additional development time is reportedly aimed at ensuring the game meets Rockstar’s high standards and fan expectations.

This shift in release timing may have a ripple effect across the industry. Publishers that were previously unsure about when to schedule their major titles—out of fear of competing with GTA VI—are now expected to finalize their own launch windows for late 2025.

As of now, Rockstar has only confirmed versions of Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no word yet on a PC release.
