Prototype 3 Rumored to Be in Development — But Don’t Get Too Excited Yet
A new rumor has surfaced online suggesting that Prototype 3 could be in development — though fans might want to keep their expectations in check. It’s been over 13 years since Prototype 2 launched, and while the idea of a third entry is exciting, there’s no official confirmation just yet.
A Brief History of the Prototype Series
The original Prototype debuted in 2009, receiving mostly positive reviews and enjoying solid commercial success. The open-world action game followed Alex Mercer, a shapeshifter with deadly powers, as he uncovered the truth about his origins while battling military forces and grotesque mutants in a quarantined New York City.
In 2012, Prototype 2 hit the shelves with a twist — Alex Mercer became the antagonist, and players took control of a new protagonist, James Heller. Though the sequel had a strong start in terms of sales, it ultimately underperformed and didn’t reach the popularity of the original. Since then, the franchise has remained dormant.
The Prototype 3 Rumor
According to a Reddit user named Bigbyy, who claims to have participated in an internal Activision "study group," Prototype 3 is allegedly in early development. The leak suggests that Alex Mercer will return as the main playable character, this time with new abilities, including the power to transform into other people to infiltrate areas. The game is said to be set once again in New York.
While intriguing, this rumor remains unverified. Fans are urged to take it with a grain of salt — especially given the franchise’s long absence from the spotlight. Still, with Activision now operating under the Xbox umbrella, some believe a Prototype revival is more plausible than ever before.
Is There Demand for Prototype 3?
There’s definitely a loyal fan base that would love to return to the Prototype universe. However, the big question is whether the demand is strong enough to justify the cost of reviving the series. The underwhelming performance of Prototype 2 was one of the key reasons the franchise was shelved, and after more than a decade, a comeback remains uncertain.
Still, if you’re feeling nostalgic, both Prototype and Prototype 2 are available on modern PlayStation and Xbox consoles via remastered ports for PS4 and Xbox One.
What Could This Mean?
Interestingly, the same leaker also shared alleged details about Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. If those claims turn out to be accurate in the coming months, it might give more credibility to the Prototype 3 rumor.
Until then, fans can only wait and hope that the viral chaos of Prototype will one day return to the gaming world.
