Fallout 3’s Intro Gets an Unreal Engine 5 Makeover, and It Looks Insanely Good
Ever wondered what Fallout 3 might look like if it were remade today? Well, thanks to YouTube user ‘R.G. Surota’ we now have a pretty solid idea. A couple of weeks ago, they uploaded a video showcasing a full recreation of Fallout 3’s iconic intro sequence in Unreal Engine 5—and honestly, it looks amazing.
This fan project takes advantage of 3D assets from the Unreal Engine Marketplace, as well as models borrowed from the Capital Wasteland mod project for Fallout 4. The end result? A beautifully remastered version of Fallout 3’s introduction, complete with atmospheric lighting, high-quality textures, and a level of detail that makes the old-school Bethesda classic feel fresh again.
Even though this is just a portfolio piece and not a playable demo, the difference between this fan remake and the original is night and day. The lighting, in particular, stands out, adding a sense of realism and immersion that the original game, with its now-dated visuals, simply couldn’t achieve. It makes you wonder: What if Bethesda actually decided to remake Fallout 3 using modern technology?
For comparison, the original Fallout 3 intro video is included in the video, and putting them side by side really shows how much of an upgrade this Unreal Engine 5 version is. The fan-made version has sharper textures, smoother animations, and an overall richer atmosphere.
GTA Unreal Engine 5
Of course, this isn’t the only fan project using Unreal Engine 5 to reimagine classic games. If you’re a fan of modding and game remakes, there are a few other incredible projects worth checking out.
Take, for example, the recent Grand Theft Auto 3 remake by YouTube creator ‘flames per second.’ This project brings Liberty City to life with high-resolution textures, improved lighting, and even some updated character models. Using a mix of GTA V mods and Unreal Engine 5’s cutting-edge tech, this remake gives us a taste of what a proper GTA 3 remaster could look like. It even includes some basic gameplay elements, like driving and interacting with the world.
And let’s not forget the Unreal Engine 5 rework of GTA San Andreas by the same YouTuber. If you were disappointed by Rockstar’s official remastered version, this fan-made project might be what you were hoping for. It manages to keep the art style of the original while upgrading the lighting and textures to modern standards. While it doesn’t completely transform the game into a next-gen experience, it’s arguably what the definitive remaster should have been.
Unfortunately, as with most fan projects like these, neither the Fallout 3 remake nor the GTA reworks are available to play. They exist purely as showcases of what’s possible with modern technology and a lot of passion from dedicated fans. Still, they’re fun to watch and dream about—especially when big studios aren’t delivering the remasters we all want.
So, if you’re a Fallout or GTA fan, these projects are definitely worth checking out. Even if they never become playable, they offer a fascinating glimpse into what our favorite classic games could look like with a modern touch.
