Heihachi Mishima Returns: Tekken 8's Fiery DLC Reveal Shocks Fans at Evo 2024
At the 2024 Evo tournament in Las Vegas, Tekken 8 producer and director Katsuhiro Harada announced that Heihachi Mishima would return to the series as a DLC fighter launching in the fall. Although Harada had previously stated that Heihachi was dead, the fiery trailer revealing the leader of the Mishima clan shocked Tekken 8 players worldwide.
Heihachi Mishima, one of the main antagonists of the Tekken series, is the father of Kazuya Mishima and the grandfather of Jin Kazama. As the former head of the Mishima Zaibatsu, a multinational conglomerate, Heihachi was crucial in creating the King of Iron Fist martial arts tournaments, where ownership of the organization was awarded to the victor. Although Heihachi was a protagonist in Tekken 2, his role as an antagonist dominated the majority of the franchise. In Tekken 7, Heihachi faced Kazuya in a final showdown atop an active volcano. After an intense battle, Kazuya used his devil powers to defeat his father and threw Heihachi's body into the volcano.
Despite Harada's earlier statement that Heihachi died in Tekken 7, his death did not last. During the Tekken 8 finals at Evo 2024, Harada presented a trailer for the next DLC fighter for Tekken 8, revealing the revived Mishima clan leader. The nearly three-minute trailer began with a scene of Mishima Zaibatsu warrior monks being attacked by an unknown assailant, who was later revealed to be Heihachi wearing a white tiger mask. The trailer also featured characters such as Eddy Gordo and Lidia Sobieska, ending with a view of the volcano where Heihachi was last seen.
With his signature grin, mustache, and hairstyle, Heihachi emerged from the flames, laughing and shouting his name. Harada announced that Heihachi would be released in the fall of 2024 as part of Tekken 8's Season 1 DLC fighter roster. He also confirmed that Lidia Sobieska would join Tekken 8 on July 25 for all platforms, with early access beginning on July 22.
Harada added that a new stage and photo mode would be available for free with Tekken 8's 1.06 update, launching alongside Lidia. With Tekken 8's new collaboration with Nike and the return of Heihachi to the series, fans eagerly await what Bandai Namco has in store for the rest of 2024.
