The most recent update for the PS5 system includes security enhancements
The latest PS5 software update, version 23.02-08.40.00, is now available for download directly from the console. While not a major update, it encompasses several significant changes, as per Sony's report.
The listed improvements include:
- Enhancement of system software security.
- Improvement in system performance and stability.
- Enhancements to messages and usability on specific screens.
Although most minor updates tend to enhance performance, security improvements are less common.
The previous notable update, version 23.03-08.20.00, improved the music functionality within the control center, introducing a new two-column layout for easier browsing. Additionally, players gained the ability to avoid inadvertently broadcasting their surroundings during PlayStation VR2 gameplay and use voice commands to explore new PS5 features.
The last major system update, released in July, introduced Dolby Atmos support and new accessibility options. These included assigning a second controller as an 'assist controller' for a single account and enabling haptic feedback in the PS5 system menu.
Notably, Sony launched the new PS5 Slim version in the UK on November 29, offering both a standard edition with a disc drive and a digital edition without it. For the digital version, users can separately purchase a Blu-ray disc drive for $79.99/ €119.99/ £99.99.
Furthermore, the new PS5 requires an additional stand priced at $30/ €30/ £25 for vertical positioning.
