2K states that "now's the perfect time for upgrades" as WWE 2K22 server shutdown is planned

The company has announced its plans to shut down the WWE 2K22 servers at the beginning of the next year and has encouraged players to transition to the latest installment in the series, WWE 2K23. In the announcement, it is stated that the WWE 2K22 servers will cease operation on January 3, 2024, which means that all online modes, including multiplayer matches and team creation features, will no longer be available.

The company emphasized that the current time is the best moment to make the switch to WWE 2K23, citing the closure of the WWE 2K22 servers. This decision to close the WWE 2K22 servers marks the shortest period of server operation in the history of the WWE series in recent years.

It is worth noting that support for online modes in WWE 2K22 is ending in less than 22 months after the game's release. In comparison, support for WWE 2K19 was discontinued almost 45 months after its release, and support for WWE 2K20 ended approximately 32 months after its release.

WWE 2K22 was released in March 2022, following nearly a 29-month wait for a new installment in the series. This release followed the critically unsuccessful WWE 2K20, which led 2K and developer Visual Concepts to skip their traditional annual October release.

WWE 2K23 was released a year later on March 14, 2023, and received an even warmer reception among critics. On the Metacritic review aggregator website, the game received scores of 82 (PS5), 81 (Xbox Series X/S), and 79 (PC).

In this installment of the series, a WarGames mode was introduced, offering 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 battles in a massive two-ring structure surrounded by a steel cage. Additionally, a new Showcase mode was dedicated to the 20-year history of John Cena.
