Ethereum Locks In Plan to Kill ETH Gas Requirement
Ethereum has a wallet problem that's honestly kind of embarrassing for 2026: you can be sitting on hundreds of dollars in USDC and still be broke, because moving it costs ETH, and if you don't have any, your stablecoins just sit there looking at you. Core developers just committed to actually fixing that.
On August 27, at the network's execution-layer call, developers moved EIP-8141 — Frame Transactions — from "Considered for Inclusion" to "Scheduled for Inclusion." That's the status where a proposal stops being a talking point and starts being a real part of the next upgrade. The upgrade in question, Hegotá, comes after Glamsterdam and is currently pointed at 2027. One outlet has already narrowed that to Q2 2027, though the Ethereum Foundation hasn't confirmed anything that specific, so take the exact date with a grain of salt.
Vitalik Buterin, one of the proposal's ten listed authors, wrote on X on September 5 that "a lot of important progress on Frames (EIP-8141) has been quietly happening over the last few months," and pointed people to the updated spec. He also flagged that ethrex now has a testnet running Frames alongside FOCIL and a few companion EIPs meant to let privacy protocols function as first-class citizens on Ethereum instead of hacks layered on top.
Mechanically, Frames breaks a transaction into pieces: one checks you authorized it, one figures out who's footing the gas bill, the rest do whatever you actually wanted done. Since the account paying and the account sending no longer have to be the same, an app could cover your fee directly, or take stablecoins from you and settle the ETH cost itself. No relayer sitting in the middle, no separate bundler infrastructure. Some wallets already fake this through external services. Frames just makes it part of how Ethereum works by default.
There's a quieter piece of this that matters more over time: key rotation. Right now, every account is locked to one private key — lose it, lose the funds, forever. Frames would let an account swap in a new key, including a post-quantum one, without moving to a new address. Ethereum's broader quantum-resistance goal sits around December 2029, so this reads less like a nice extra and more like something that has to exist before that deadline means anything.
Now the part that's genuinely hard to feel good about: EIP-8141 isn't the only account abstraction design on the table, and the disagreement has gotten personal. Coinbase, Base, Optimism and WalletConnect are behind a rival, EIP-8130, which claims a 63% gas reduction on transfers and was supposed to ship on Base's Cobalt upgrade this September. Base quietly pushed that back to "TBD" on August 20, so for now EIP-8130 only runs on an internal devnet. What's stranger is that Pedro Gomes — who's listed as a co-author on Frame Transactions itself — posted on X that after months of work on EIP-8141, he'd come around to thinking EIP-8130 was the better path: simpler, more portable, closer to what wallets actually need. That's not a competitor sniping from outside. That's someone who helped write the spec saying, in public, maybe we picked wrong.
It's not a small disagreement either. At the same call where EIP-8141 got scheduled, Ethlabs researcher Derek Chiang objected, saying the move risked telling the community its concerns didn't matter — both about Frame Transactions' remaining issues and about EIP-8130's claims. Organizers pushed back, insisting scheduling only locks in that account abstraction ships with Hegotá, not what it looks like when it does. Developers are now floating two options: merge the designs, or build 8130-style accounts on top of Frames so an address behaves identically on mainnet and on a rollup. Neither has an answer yet.
None of this is live. The spec is still a draft, there's no activation date, and the two camps racing toward the same finish line haven't agreed on the route there. But the roadmap direction is set now: a wallet holding only stablecoins should, eventually, never need to touch ETH at all.
