Silviu Stroye, CEO of tournament operator PGL, shared his opinion on the development of esports in the coming years. According to the bold forecasts of the Romanian functionary, within a few years, the audience of eSports tournaments can grow tenfold - up to 1 billion people.

We are glad that esports is growing organically and steadily. We saw this at PGL Major Antwerp 2022, which became the largest indoor arena tournament. We currently see esports events reaching up to 100 million people. I am sure that in a few years this number will be from 500 million to 1 billion people watching a particular tournament. This would mean an almost tenfold increase in the number of viewers in the coming years.

The next generation of esports games will start coming out in the next couple of years. This new generation will take us to a whole new level. Next year is already booked. We are making plans for 2024.

As a reminder, tournament operator PGL was recently ranked second among the most valuable organizers of esports tournaments in the world according to Esports Charts in a recently published analysis. The score was based on the calculation of various metrics such as HW (hours watched), physical audience during live LAN events, level of sponsors, organization cost, and overall event popularity.

PGL has hosted the last two CS:GO majors — PGL Major Stockholm 2021 and PGL Major Antwerp 2022. According to some estimates, these championships rank among the most successful esports events.
