Heroes of Newerth servers going down today
The lifecycle of the esports MOBA discipline is officially coming to an end as the developers from S2 Games will shut down the Heroes of Newerth servers today.
The game was released in 2010 using the Garena service. HoN was a remake of Defense of the Ancients for Warcraft III. The game had a number of modes familiar to all MOBA fans.
Initially, the game was paid, but a year later, the developers transferred the project to the “free-to-play” system. That is, Heroes of Newerth became free, but microtransactions appeared in the game. The game also developed eSports, but the project itself was not as popular as League of Legends, and later Dota 2. So, for example, in the final part of the HON Tour 2016, a prize pool of $160,000 was up for grabs. The tournament itself was held in Thailand.
The first signals that the discipline is living out its last years appeared in 2017. Then the official news and updates on the game stopped coming out. In 2019, microtransactions were no longer accepted. And today, June 20, 2022, the Heroes of Newerth servers will be shut down. The game is 12 years old this year.
