ConnectiCon, the state's premier pop culture fan convention, has kicked off for an exciting weekend, drawing an enthusiastic crowd that wrapped around the Connecticut Convention Center even before the doors opened.
For attendees like Mystic resident Sam Lord, ConnectiCon offers a chance to connect with fellow enthusiasts, stating, "We get to meet a bunch of other nerds – so that’s just so fun." With its focus on cosplay, comics, anime, and more, ConnectiCon has become a beloved tradition as the longest-running pop culture convention in the state.
Costumes take center stage at ConnectiCon, with participants showcasing their creativity and passion. Dahlia Nelson, dressed as a mesmerizing forest fairy, shared her excitement about her costume, while Hartford resident Amber Dawn stunned onlookers with her impressive 7-foot-5 Lady D cosplay from Resident Evil Village, complete with stilts.
With an estimated 12,000 visitors expected from across the country, ConnectiCon serves as a melting pot of diverse communities. Beacon Falls resident Brynn Stangarone expressed how the convention brings together people from marginalized backgrounds, united by their love for fictional media and creative expression through costumes.
This year, ConnectiCon's popularity has soared, with ticket sales witnessing a 30% increase compared to the previous year. Vice President of Programming, Amanda Achille, attributed this surge to people's eagerness to return to events like this after the pandemic, finally feeling comfortable to engage in social gatherings.
Over 120 vendors are present at ConnectiCon, offering an array of merchandise to cater to every fandom. Whether you're a fan of beloved characters, T-shirts, stuffed animals, or even dream of wielding your very own lightsaber, the convention has something for everyone.
Achille emphasized the inclusivity of the event, stating, "There's literally something here for everyone – we try to cover everyone's fandom. It doesn't matter what you're into, if you identify as a nerd or a geek, you will have fun here."
ConnectiCon promises an exhilarating and inclusive experience, igniting the passion of fans and celebrating the vibrant world of pop culture throughout the weekend.
