A Glimpse at the Roadmap

On launch day, Sloclap published a blog post outlining upcoming features for Rematch. These include:

  • Full crossplay support (a top development priority)
  • Gameplay and balance adjustments
  • Critical bug fixes
  • Expanded social functionality
  • Updates for casual play
  • New competitive systems in the works

Among the most exciting additions is a tournament mode, which Sloclap has confirmed is actively being developed alongside features like player-run clubs and an elite player leaderboard.

Tournament Mode: What to Expect

Speaking with PC Gamer, Sloclap co-founder and CEO Pierre Tarno revealed that tournament mode will be Rematch's first major competitive update. Designed as scheduled events, tournaments will differ in structure and rewards compared to traditional ranked matches.

Players will be able to join in two ways: by forming a team with friends or using the game's matchmaking system to be paired with others. While it's still unclear whether matchmaking will be random or based on skill rating (MMR), Tarno hinted that a skill-based approach is more likely.

Tournament sessions are expected to run about two hours, though exact formatting details haven't been finalized. Given the game's standard 6-minute match length and brief intermissions between matches, the tournament mode may feature:

  • Single-elimination brackets: Potentially 16 teams
  • Double-elimination brackets: Possibly 8 teams, with separate winner and loser brackets

Player-Run Clubs: A New Social Layer

Tarno also offered a peek into the upcoming club system—Rematch's version of guilds or clans. Rather than using generic logos and names, clubs will be inspired by real-world locations. Players will choose cities or regions as their club's home base, creating a more grounded and immersive football experience.

"The idea is to root it in real places, real cities," Tarno said. This approach aims to reinforce Rematch's commitment to authentic soccer fantasy. Importantly, players won’t be limited by their physical location when selecting a club, enabling the formation of online, globally connected communities.

However, Tarno cautioned that the club feature is still a long way from release.

Challenges and Opportunities

Tournaments will add a fresh layer of competition to Rematch, providing a structured alternative to ranked matches. But the game’s buy-to-play model could pose challenges for the system’s success. With potentially 80 players needed per tournament, ensuring evenly matched skill levels may be difficult without a broad enough player base.
