Bayonetta Creator Hideki Kamiya Wanted to Launch a New Trilogy Before Leaving PlatinumGames

Hideki Kamiya, the visionary behind the Bayonetta series, recently revealed that he had plans to continue the franchise with a brand-new trilogy before parting ways with PlatinumGames in 2023. Known for shaping the third-person action genre, Kamiya’s legacy includes influential titles such as Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, and Okami during his time at Capcom. After founding PlatinumGames in 2006, one of his first major projects was the original Bayonetta in 2009.

The game introduced players to the stylish and deadly Umbra Witch, who wielded firearms and magical hair-based attacks to battle otherworldly foes. The title became a cult classic and spawned two successful sequels—both published by Nintendo and released exclusively on its consoles—further cementing Bayonetta as a cornerstone of action gaming.

✨ Bayonetta’s Expanding Legacy

Beyond the core trilogy, Bayonetta also made appearances in The Wonderful 101 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, while 2023 saw the launch of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, a prequel exploring the witch’s early years. While new entries remain possible, Kamiya’s departure means he likely won’t be involved in shaping the franchise’s future.

In a recent YouTube video (via Nintendo Everything), Kamiya clarified that contrary to speculation, he never intended to end the series with Bayonetta 3. Instead, he had envisioned a "new chapter" that would have kicked off a fresh trilogy, potentially evolving the gameplay beyond the hack-and-slash mechanics that defined the earlier titles.

🔄 Kamiya Reflects on Unfinished Projects and What’s Next

Kamiya also touched on his other notable projects, including the cancelled Scalebound and his interest in remaking the original Devil May Cry—a prospect that could gain traction following the success of Netflix’s Devil May Cry animated series.

Currently, Kamiya is focused on an Okami sequel, which he’s developing under Clover’s Inc., a new studio he co-founded with former developers of the 2006 classic. While there’s no official word on a Bayonetta 4, fans are left wondering how the franchise will evolve without its original creator at the helm.
