Fallout 76 January 2025 Update: Stability Fixes and Improvements

Bethesda Game Studios has rolled out a January 2025 update for Fallout 76, aimed at improving stability and fixing persistent issues in Appalachia, the West Virginia region where the game is set. Released in 2018, Fallout 76 serves as a prequel to previous games in the series, immersing players in the year 2102 as they emerge from Vault 76 to rebuild the post-apocalyptic world.

January 21 Server Downtime and Surprise Update

On January 21, 2025, Fallout 76 servers were temporarily taken offline to address recurring crashes and major glitches. While players expected routine maintenance, Bethesda used the opportunity to discreetly release a new update. The downtime targeted critical issues like raid crashes and game-breaking bugs. As a gesture of goodwill, the update delivered a suite of fixes aimed at enhancing gameplay across the board.

Highlights from the Update

Bethesda shared a comprehensive list of patch notes on Twitter, detailing improvements and fixes.

Key changes include:

Creature Fixes:

  • Resolved a bug where Scorchbeasts would continue firing indefinitely.
  • Fixed Mothman’s unintended whispering in the Gleaming Depths.

Item Adjustments:

  • Super Mutants now drop a balanced amount of caps, addressing players’ exploitation concerns.
  • Supplies are now displayed correctly in the Pip-Boy Currencies tab.

C.A.M.P. Improvements:

  • Players can now build Plastiform Blue Star in their camps.
  • Fixes were implemented to reduce the prevalence of controversial floating camps.

UI, Perks, and Quests:

  • Various tweaks to the user interface, perks, quests, and weapons.

The update also builds upon changes introduced in the December 2024 Gleaming Depths update, particularly addressing issues in the Ash Heap region of Appalachia.

Community Reactions

While the update has been praised for showing Bethesda's ongoing commitment to Fallout 76, it sparked mixed reactions. Some players voiced their disappointment over the lack of updates for Starfield, Bethesda’s newest IP, calling for the developer to prioritize cross-save and cross-play functionality in Fallout 76.

Looking Ahead

Despite the buzz surrounding Fallout 76, fans are eagerly anticipating news about the next major installment in the Fallout franchise. Bethesda's Todd Howard confirmed that Fallout 5 will follow the release of The Elder Scrolls 6. Players are already speculating about potential features, including a Brotherhood of Steel protagonist and a host of improvements to the series' gameplay and narrative.

For now, the Fallout 76 January update proves that the game remains alive and well in 2025, keeping wastelanders busy as they wait for the next chapter in the beloved franchise.
