Sony Confirms PSN Account Required for The Last of Us 2 Remaster on PC

Sony’s making waves again with its PC game policies. This time with The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. As spotted by VGC, the game’s Steam page confirms you’ll need a PlayStation Network (PSN) account to play, even though the game is still three months away from release.

This isn’t surprising for PC players. Sony has stuck to the PSN requirement for all its Steam games, and The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is no exception. The issue? PSN is only available in 73 countries, leaving over 100 others – like the Baltics and most of Africa – unable to access the game. While some players create PSN accounts in supported regions, there’s always the fear Sony could crack down on those accounts.

The backlash isn’t new. Sony’s PSN requirement has dragged down the Steam ratings of even great games like God of War Ragnarök and Until Dawn. Mods to remove the requirement have been pulled out of fear of Sony’s response. The policy also sparked controversy with Helldivers 2, which faced a review bomb on Steam before Sony eventually removed the PSN requirement – though the game is still unavailable in unsupported regions.

Sony says this is about “player security” and claims PSN linking helps protect against griefing and abuse while giving banned players a way to appeal. But for many, the restriction feels like a frustrating barrier. With The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered heading to PC, the backlash is already brewing.
