Silent Hill 2 Remake Player Recreates Retro Experience with CRT TV and True '90s Mode
A dedicated Silent Hill 2 remake player recreated the nostalgic feel of the original game by connecting their PS5 to a classic CRT TV, mimicking the experience of playing it on the PlayStation 2. To further enhance the retro vibe, they disabled most of the modern quality-of-life features, making the remake look and feel like a game straight out of the early 2000s.
The remake of Silent Hill 2 includes several new features, including an over-the-shoulder camera perspective and visual updates. One nostalgic feature is the "90s filter," which allows players to toggle a visual style that aims to recreate the look of the game during its original era. However, for Reddit user Honest_Brain_2385, this wasn't enough. They took it a step further by playing the game on a CRT screen and disabling key HUD elements, like low-health indicators and on-screen tutorials, to create what they called the "true" 90s mode.
Other fans shared their opinions on this setup, discussing both the fan's creative approach and the official filters provided by the developer, Bloober Team. Some players felt the VHS-style filter included in the game was too exaggerated, while others appreciated the effort to bring a nostalgic feel. Despite these efforts, fans noted that certain visual elements from the original Silent Hill 2 are missing from the remake, such as the heavy film grain and static effects that appeared when the player was at low health, features that enhanced the eerie atmosphere of the original.
Though the remake lacks some of these classic elements and now features an over-the-shoulder view instead of the fixed-camera angles from the original, the fan’s dedication to recreating the retro experience shows a deep appreciation for the series' history. Interestingly, Konami seems to recognize the appeal of nostalgia as well, reportedly including a fixed-camera perspective option in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 3 remake.
