UPDATES:
Tokyo Game Show: Official Attendance Numbers and Big Change for Next Year

This year’s Tokyo Game Show has wrapped up, and the official attendance figures have now been released. While the event was busy overall, the data reveals an interesting trend: attendance rose significantly on business days but dropped by around 20% on public days.

In fact, Thursday — one of the business-only days — saw roughly 10,000 more visitors compared to last year, something that was noticeable just walking the show floor.

Across all four days, total attendance reached 263,101 visitors, slightly lower than last year’s 274,739.

 1

Official Figures from CESA

Organizers suggest the dip in public attendance could be due to fewer major console game announcements and the continuing dominance of large mobile game booths, which tend to draw less excitement from the general audience.

Meanwhile, business days are becoming increasingly crowded. To address this, Tokyo Game Show will expand to five days next year — running from Thursday, September 17, through Monday, September 21, which is a national holiday in Japan. This marks the first time in the event’s history that it will run for five consecutive days.

Long-Term Industry Outlook

As for the ongoing wave of layoffs in the gaming industry, their impact is not yet visible. Most major titles have development cycles of 7–8 years, meaning the games on display this year likely started production back in 2017–2018. The effects of those layoffs won’t be felt for several more years, so the apparent “boom” we are seeing now does not reflect the current state of the industry.

PlayStation at Tokyo Game Show 2025: Booth Highlights and Hands-On Impressions

The PlayStation booth at Tokyo Game Show 2025 is buzzing with excitement, offering fans memorable photo ops and hands-on time with some of the most anticipated PS5 titles. Here’s an inside look at the booth and our detailed impressions of several standout games, including Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, Onimusha Way of the Sword, The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin, Fishbowl, and Meteora.

PlayStation is showcasing 14 highly anticipated titles at TGS this year, featuring games like Ghost of Yōtei and MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls. Let’s dive into the lineup.

 1

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake

Publisher: Square Enix | Release Date: October 30, 2025

In the Dragon Quest I demo, players track down the mischievous Robbin’ ‘Ood Thieves after they steal a key, pursuing them into a mountain cave. Unlike the original’s one-on-one encounters, the remake allows solo battles against groups of enemies. Using the Thorn Whip and area-of-effect spells like Sizz, players can strike multiple foes at once — though the sheer number of enemies keeps battles intense. The duel with the Robbin’ ‘Ood Thieves was challenging, but enemy weaknesses are now highlighted, giving you the chance to strategize, heal, and ultimately claim victory.

The Dragon Quest II demo tasks players with defending a mermaid’s home from Hargon’s minions by diving beneath the ocean’s surface. This time, you control a four-person party that includes the Princess of Cannock, a newcomer to the playable roster. Agile and capable, she wields spells like Kacrack and Frizzle, along with special abilities such as Thin Air and Hypnowhip. Her occasional independent actions add a layer of unpredictability to the battles, making her a lively presence in both combat and story moments.

The remake introduces a beautifully realized underwater world. Sunlight filters through the sea, illuminating detailed coral reefs and sea life. Using Lorelei’s Harp, players can seamlessly switch between surface sailing and underwater exploration, encountering unique monsters in each layer of the ocean — including entirely new foes exclusive to this remake.

Onimusha Way of the Sword

Publisher: Capcom | Release Date: 2026

The demo takes players to a dramatic reimagining of Kyoto’s Kiyomizu-dera Temple. The game’s defining feature is its dual-gauge system: both protagonist Miyamoto Musashi and his Genma foes share a yellow Health Gauge and a red Stamina Gauge. Skillfully landing blows or counters drains enemy Stamina, and once emptied, Musashi can unleash a devastating Break Issen attack. Conversely, if Musashi’s own Stamina runs out, he becomes highly vulnerable — creating a constant push-and-pull dynamic.

Combat is fast and technical. Basic blocks are easy to execute, but the game rewards mastery of advanced techniques like Parry (a well-timed guard that opens enemies up for a counterattack) and Deflect (a more difficult maneuver that drains enemy Stamina when timed perfectly). The series’ iconic Issen counterattack also returns, requiring frame-perfect timing for maximum impact — and delivering a thrilling sense of accomplishment when executed successfully.

The boss battle against Sasaki Ganryu is a highlight, taking place on the iconic wooden stage of Kiyomizu-dera. Ganryu’s unpredictable flurry of axe kicks and spinning slashes makes for an intense duel that demands precise parries, stamina management, and every skill you’ve learned up to that point.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin

Publisher: Netmarble | Release Date: January 28, 2026

This open-world action RPG brings Nakaba Suzuki’s beloved manga and anime to life in stunning detail.

Story Mode follows Tristan and Tioreh as they investigate Lake Penace, the site of a legendary battle between Estarossa and Escanor. The gameplay offers variety — from 3D shooting sequences to puzzle-solving and underwater exploration — and the discovery of a mysterious pendant teases a compelling original narrative.

Open World Mode allows players to roam far beyond Liones Castle, exploring grasslands, forests, coastlines, and iconic series locations like the Fairy King’s Forest. Players can wall-jump, glide from heights, and engage with townsfolk to unlock quests. The dynamic day-night cycle ensures certain events can only be triggered after dark.

Combat lets you swap between up to four characters mid-battle, each with a unique playstyle — Tioreh can fly, Tristan specializes in speed, and Slader delivers crushing heavy blows. Experimentation is encouraged, as the fun lies in discovering which character suits your style.

Fishbowl

Developer: imissmyfriends.studio (India) | Release: TBD

 2

Fishbowl is an intimate, pixel-art coming-of-age story set over the course of a month. You play as Alo, who has just started a new job and begun living alone, while quietly grieving the recent loss of her grandmother. The game blends warm, richly detailed home environments with stark, monochrome dreamscapes that mirror Alo’s emotional state.

Gameplay mixes storytelling with light puzzles and mini-games. Solving sliding puzzles tied to her grandmother’s belongings reveals heartfelt reflections, culminating in the discovery of a toy goldfish in a bowl — a key narrative symbol. Alo also works remotely as a video editor, with editing sequences presented as rhythm-based mini-games. A subtle gauge tracks her emotional state, filling as she completes tasks, cooks meals, or chats with friends, suggesting that small acts of care and routine play a crucial role in her healing journey.

Meteora

Developer: Big Boot Games | Release Date: January 2026

 3

Meteora, developed under Sony’s India Hero Project, is a high-speed space racing game with battle mechanics, also supporting PS VR2. Players control a meteor racing through space, dodging asteroids, smashing rivals, and speeding toward goal portals.

Each stage offers a unique challenge:

  • Stage 1 – Race: A pure speed trial that demands precise boosting and item collection.
  • Stage 2 – Elimination: Take down rival meteors before reaching the finish line.
  • Stage 3 – Time Attack: A timed race that mixes in hostile rivals and explosive obstacles.

With its vibrant cosmic visuals, precision-focused gameplay, and adrenaline-pumping soundtrack, Meteora captures the joy of classic arcade racing while delivering something fresh and visually spectacular.

Annapurna Interactive Reveals Three New Games Ahead of Tokyo Game Show

Annapurna Interactive, the acclaimed publisher behind Stray, Outer Wilds, and Kentucky Route Zero, hosted a brand-new Annapurna Direct showcase on Tuesday, just before this year’s Tokyo Game Show. During the event, the publisher revealed three distinctive and visually striking titles — all of which will be playable at the convention later this week.

Among the highlights is a turn-based musical RPG whose creator humorously described it as “Clair Obscur meets K-pop Demon Hunters.” Here’s everything announced at the showcase:

D-topia

D-topia is a calm and contemplative puzzle-adventure game where players take on the role of a Facilitator in a futuristic residential facility — a “seemingly perfect society managed by A.I.” On the surface, this utopia appears flawless, but the game’s puzzles center on exploration and making subtle, meaningful decisions that reveal the humanity hidden beneath this manufactured happiness.

Developed by Marumittu Games, D-topia is scheduled to launch in 2026 on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

People of Note

From Iridium Studios comes People of Note, a fully-fledged musical reimagined as a turn-based RPG. True to its concept, the narrative, battles, and mechanics are all conveyed through music, offering players a true “interactive musical” experience.

Love musicals or not, it’s hard not to admire the game’s ambition. People of Note is set to release in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Demi and the Fractured Dream

Demi and the Fractured Dream is a heartfelt action-adventure that pays homage to classics like the 3D Legend of Zelda games, Journey, and Devil May Cry. Players step into the role of Demi, a “voidsent” born into the dreamlike world of Somnus, seeking a way to break free from a cursed destiny.

The game promises nostalgic hack-and-slash combat, environmental puzzle-solving, and a beautiful, dreamlike world to explore. It will launch in 2026 for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Sony Confirms PlayStation Lineup for Tokyo Game Show 2025, Including Ghost of Yotei and Marvel Tokon

Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially announced part of its lineup for the upcoming Tokyo Game Show 2025 (TGS), set to take place from September 25 to 28 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. Among the featured titles are Ghost of Yotei, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, and the award-winning Astro Bot—showcasing a strong PlayStation presence at the event.

A First Look at Two Major Upcoming Exclusives

While Astro Bot is already familiar to fans as a critically acclaimed PS5-exclusive from last year, Ghost of Yotei and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls are two of Sony’s most anticipated upcoming console exclusives.

Sony confirmed that both new titles will be available for hands-on sessions at the PlayStation booth, but access will be limited to industry professionals on September 25 and 26. Meanwhile, Astro Bot will be featured as part of the Family Game Park, which is open to the public on September 27 and 28.

TGS Appearance Comes Ahead of Ghost of Yotei’s Launch

The announcement is especially exciting for fans looking forward to Ghost of Yotei, as the game is scheduled to launch just days later on October 2. Its appearance at TGS is expected to offer deeper insights into gameplay, story, and world design—likely accompanied by new trailers and player impressions.

For those awaiting a chance to try Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, which recently confirmed a closed beta in early September, the TGS demo may be the next best opportunity to see what this Marvel-inspired fighter brings to the PlayStation ecosystem.

 1

Sony to Reveal More Titles Soon

Sony’s TGS 2025 lineup isn’t final yet. The company plans to announce additional titles and schedule details in the weeks leading up to the event, according to a post on the Japanese PlayStation Blog.

Capcom and Other Industry Giants Also Attending

Sony won’t be the only major player at TGS 2025. Capcom has also confirmed its attendance and is preparing to showcase a number of high-profile titles, including Resident Evil Requiem, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and the long-awaited Pragmata.

With big names like Sony and Capcom on board and several world premieres expected, Tokyo Game Show 2025 is shaping up to be one of the biggest gaming events of the year.
