Sneak Peek: Doom: The Dark Ages
QuakeCon 2024 attendees shared their enthusiastic impressions of the upcoming game, Doom: The Dark Ages. This medieval-themed prequel, announced at the Xbox Games Showcase, explores the Doom Slayer's origins as he battles demonic forces.
Set for release in 2025, Doom: The Dark Ages features exciting new weapons like a serrated shield, a skull-firing railgun, and a chain flail. Players can also control a mecha suit to combat giant demons. The game offers a slower-paced experience with a focus on parrying and guarding. The Glory Kill system has been revamped, allowing players to execute staggered enemies with a variety of weapons.
New Mechanics and Features
The game introduces dragons and the Atlan mecha suit as recurring mechanics. The mecha has its own HUD, UI, and combat capabilities. The game promises a more open world compared to previous titles, although fans are advised to await official trailers for a clearer picture of what's to come.
At QuakeCon 2024, attendees had the chance to participate in a private screening of the shooter DOOM: The Dark Ages, announced earlier this summer with a vivid trailer.
Recording the event was prohibited, so DOOM fans shared their thoughts on the game’s dedicated forum.
What We Know
Gamers have overwhelmingly commented that the latest entry in the legendary franchise is darker, more brutal, and considerably slower-paced than DOOM Eternal. They confirm developers' statements that the Doom Slayer in this game is not as agile or mobile as in the previous two titles. Instead, he relies heavily on his robust armor and uses a shield to block enemy attacks. This shield, however, serves a dual purpose: it is equipped with a chain drive that can be used to slice through demons.
The shield isn't exclusive to the main character; his opponents also have shields, which they use to build defenses. When they attack, their shields flash yellow, giving players a chance to respond quickly.
Players also noted the addition of several new enemies, including a spider-like boss reminiscent of creatures from Dark Souls. Some demons have also become significantly larger.
In DOOM: The Dark Ages, there will be fewer color indicators. For example, when an enemy is ready to be finished off, it no longer glows red. Instead, a halo appears above its head.
As shown in the debut trailer, in certain missions, the Doom Slayer uses a massive battle robot (mech) to take down especially large foes and their smaller minions. One level even reminded players of "Mars," likely referencing the red planet from DOOM (2016).
The protagonist has gained several new melee moves and now has weapons with regenerating ammunition, a double-barreled plasma rifle, a single-barreled shotgun, and a spiked chain.
Release Date
DOOM: The Dark Ages is set to be released in 2025 on PC (via Steam and the Microsoft Store), PS5, and Xbox Series, and will be available on Game Pass from day one.
The addition of the iconic two-part shooter Doom to Xbox Game Pass, announced at QuakeCon 2024, is not the only surprise from Bethesda.
At QuakeCon 2024, the developers behind The Elder Scrolls and Starfield unveiled an officially supported system for remakes and mods called Creations/Creation Club. This club has been available for years in Skyrim and Fallout 4, and has recently become accessible in Starfield as well.
The real surprise came when Bethesda announced that Starfield would feature demonic themes from Doom. The video concluded with scenes from "At Hell's Gate," a project by Kinggath Creations, which will soon be available for free in Starfield through Creations on both consoles and PC.
"With prizes," Bethesda highlights in the trailer.
In addition, Bethesda is promoting the top creations within Starfield's official modding system. These include Cyber Ops Gear, TG Luxury Real Estate, the robot DEREK, and the mod StarSim: Mining Conglomerate, which expands on the theme of space mining.
During the QuakeCon 2024 festival, which started on August 8, id Software unveiled Doom + Doom 2, a collection featuring enhanced versions of the first two games from the legendary Doom series.
In 2019, id Software had already re-released Doom and Doom 2 on modern platforms with technical upgrades. However, this new release offers both games "as one complete package," allowing players to switch between them seamlessly without exiting the game.
Key enhancements include:
- Co-op and Deathmatch modes with support for up to 16 players and crossplay capabilities.
- Mod support with an integrated browser, enabling players on PCs and current-gen consoles to download modifications.
- An IDKFA soundtrack for both games, including new tracks for Doom 2, composed by Andrew Hulshult, along with the original MIDI tracks.
- Enhanced performance with multithreaded rendering supporting resolutions up to 4K.
- The games have been ported to the KEX engine by Nightdive Studios.
- Localization in eight new languages.
Besides the original games, Doom + Doom 2 includes level packs and expansions such as The Plutonia Experiment, TNT: Evilution, No Rest for the Living, Master Levels for Doom 2, and 26 Deathmatch maps.
The collection also features a brand new episode called Legacy of Rust, developed collaboratively by id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames, which includes 16 levels, new demons, and new weapons.
The Doom + Doom 2 collection is available now for $10 on PC (via Steam, EGS, and GOG), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, S, and Nintendo Switch, and is also part of the Game Pass catalog.
In great news for fans, anyone who owns either of the 2019 re-releases (Doom or Doom 2) on the listed platforms will receive the new collection as a free upgrade.
