The PlayStation 5 shortage is expected to continue into next year due to strong demand, said Sony's CFO Hiroki Totoki.

Interestingly, information has already appeared months earlier that the shortage of Sony's next-generation consoles will not end this year, but according to Sony, the shortage may even last until 2022. At least that's what Sony's CFO told investors after the company's recent financial statements.

In its most recent financial report, Sony said PS5 sales surpassed 7.8 million units, outstripping initial PS4 sales with both consoles launching within the same time frame. An impressive feat given the current supply problems. Sony said it intends to release more PlayStation 5 consoles to meet demand, but as Sony's CFO has now pointed out, the company will probably still be unable to meet demand.

I don't think we can meet all the demand this year, and even if we secure a lot more supply and produce a lot more PlayStation 5 units next year, our supply will not be able to catch up with demand.

The chief executive assured that although supply and demand seem to be gradually leveling off, the number of incoming consoles will still not be able to satisfy all consumers.
