Insomniac’s Wolverine Reportedly Launching in 2026, Venom Spin-Off in Development

Insomniac Games’ long-awaited Wolverine project is reportedly planned for release in 2026, with a Venom spin-off game slated to arrive afterward. The report comes from Mp1st, which has previously shared accurate information regarding unreleased titles. If true, it sets the stage for a significant expansion of Insomniac’s Marvel universe following the success of Spider-Man 2.

First revealed in September 2021, Wolverine was announced alongside Spider-Man 2 during a PlayStation showcase. At the time, Insomniac noted that Wolverine was in the very early stages of development, with no release window given. The game is set in the same universe as the studio’s Spider-Man series, but it is billed as a standalone title rather than a crossover. Since that announcement, official updates have been nonexistent.

Interest in the project reignited after last year’s major Insomniac hack, which exposed internal documents and even early playable builds. The leaks circulated widely, sparking speculation about the game’s development progress and potential launch timeline. While Sony and Insomniac have maintained silence since then, the latest report suggests the game is still firmly on track and targeting a release within the next two years.

The Venom spin-off is also part of Insomniac’s roadmap, according to the same report. Its existence has been the subject of heavy speculation since Spider-Man 2’s release in 2023. That game featured an extended sequence where players took direct control of Venom, complete with a unique move-set and traversal abilities. The sequence immediately led to theories that Insomniac was laying groundwork for a standalone experience centered on the symbiote anti-hero.

Insomniac’s senior narrative director, Jon Paquette, previously addressed the possibility of a Venom-focused title, making clear that the studio would consider fan demand in shaping its future.

“So, here’s what we’re doing. We’re focused on Spider-Man 2, and what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna wait to see how the fans react. We’re gonna listen to the fans and we’re gonna ask ourselves, ‘Okay, what do the fans really want?’” — Jon Paquette, Insomniac Games

Spider-Man 2 was released exclusively for PlayStation 5 in October 2023 and became one of the studio’s best-received titles to date. VGC’s five-star review described it as “an incredibly confident sequel and one of 2023’s best games.” Despite a strong reception, Insomniac later confirmed that the game would not be receiving additional story content, shelving earlier plans for downloadable expansions.

The decision not to pursue Spider-Man 2 story DLC may indicate that the studio is fully committing its resources to larger projects such as Wolverine and the Venom spin-off. Insomniac has also been linked to a third, unannounced project, though no details have emerged.

Wolverine is being led by Brian Horton and Cameron Christian, creative leads on Spider-Man: Miles Morales. While little is known about its structure or gameplay, expectations are high that it will offer a darker tone than Insomniac’s Spider-Man games while retaining the studio’s hallmark fluid combat and traversal systems.

Venom, meanwhile, already has a strong foundation established in Spider-Man 2, aided by the performance of actor Tony Todd, who voiced the character in the game. Paquette previously praised Todd’s portrayal, noting how well it matched the direction the team wanted for the symbiote storyline. With a standalone title, Insomniac would have the opportunity to further develop Venom’s mythos and carve out a unique identity distinct from the Spider-Man series.

If the report proves accurate, PlayStation players can expect Wolverine to headline Insomniac’s output in 2026, followed by Venom soon after. With Spider-Man 2 already cementing the studio’s Marvel universe as a major part of Sony’s first-party lineup, these projects underline Insomniac’s growing role as the creative anchor for Marvel on console.
