Battlefield 6 Open Beta Will Let Players Choose Between Class-Locked and Open Weapon Loadouts

A developer involved in Battlefield 6 has confirmed that the game’s upcoming open beta will allow players to experience both class-locked and open weapon systems, offering greater flexibility and catering to different playstyles. As the first major installment since Battlefield 2042 in 2021, Battlefield 6 is currently in testing, with a full release window expected to be announced soon.

While EA has yet to confirm an official launch date, the publisher has revealed that the first trailer for Battlefield 6 will premiere on July 24, 2025, unveiling the game’s full title and thematic direction. Still, thanks to extensive community playtesting via the Battlefield Labs program, many features of the game are already known, and the trailer will likely confirm long-standing leaks and speculation.

A Return to Player Choice with Weapon Systems

One of the more debated features is the weapon system tied to player classes. Unlike past titles, Battlefield 6 introduces a hybrid approach. According to a post by David Sirland, Lead Producer at Battlefield Studios, the open beta will include two playlist options:

  • Closed Weapons Playlist: Follows a class-locked approach where each class can only use its signature weapons.
  • Open Weapons Playlist: Allows players to use any weapon, regardless of class.

Here’s how the class-locked system breaks down:

  • Assault Rifles → Assault Class only
  • Submachine Guns → Engineer Class only
  • Light Machine Guns → Support Class only
  • Sniper Rifles → Recon Class only
  • Shotguns, Carbines, and Designated Marksman Rifles (DMRs) → Available to all classes

This system bears a resemblance to the class structure from Battlefield 4, a fan-favorite in the franchise, and could appeal to players who skipped Battlefield V and the less acclaimed Battlefield 2042.

Will Class-Locked Weapons Become Standard?

As of now, EA has not committed to making the class-locked system a permanent feature beyond the beta. The open beta seems intended to collect feedback and data on how players interact with each loadout type, helping the studio understand what direction to take for the final release.

In any case, the beta will provide fans with the opportunity to test both systems firsthand and help shape the future of Battlefield 6’s multiplayer design.
